Missouri State Spoils Cajuns Opener, 8-2
2/13/2026 6:34:00 PM | Baseball
Three-game series resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Â
Yusypchuk (1-0), a returning weekend starter for the Bears (1-0), surrendered only three singles over his time on the mound. He walked two and struck out three. Left-hander Tyler Charlton gave up a pair of Cajuns' runs over 1.2 innings before Missouri transfer Brock Lucas came on to get the last four outs, earning the save.
Â
Missouri State had early success against Cajuns starter Ty Roman (0-1) when Gabe Roessler led off with a base hit. Caden Bogenpohl drew a walk and Gollert doubled just inside the third base bag to give the Bears a 1-0 lead before Roman retired the next three batters to limit the damage.
Â
Roman, making his Louisiana debut after going 9-1 in 2025 at San Jacinto College, would give up just one more hit over the next four innings, a solo homer to catcher Charlie Carter leading off the fifth. Roman exited after the fifth, surrendering three hits, with a walk and four strikeouts.
Â
The Bears added to their lead with a pair of homers in the eighth inning off Cajuns reliever Garret Carter, who came on in the sixth and retired the first seven batters he faced. But Bogenpohl, considered to be the top pro prospect in Conference USA this year, belted a long homer to right-center and one out later, Bobby Atkinson drilled another for the Bears, who slugged 109 homers a year ago to make it a 4-0 game.
Â
After Charlton retired the Cajuns in order in the seventh, the Cajuns (0-1) got on the board when pinch-hitter Kasen Bellard drew a walk. Maddox Mandino bunted and Charlton's throw to first base was wide, giving the Cajuns runners at the corners. Freshman Blaze Rodriguez' RBI grounder drove in the first Cajuns run of the season and freshman Colt Brown greeted Lucas with a double in the left-center gap to cut Missouri State's lead to 4-2.
Â
Missouri State put the game away in the ninth against freshman Bryce Wilson as Max Knight led off with a single and Jax Ryan followed with a bunt single up the first-base line. Back-to-back walks forced in a run and sophomore Parker Smith hit a batter, setting the stage for Gallert's second double of the game for the final margin.
Â
The two teams will square off in the second game of the series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Veteran left-hander Andrew Hermann will get the start for the Cajuns. Fans can listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) or worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
