Three-Run Eleventh Lifts Missouri State Past Louisiana, 13-12

Ragin' Cajuns squander seven-run lead; will look to salvage series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

LAFAYETTE – Missouri State erupted for three runs in the 11th inning and held on to defeat Louisiana 13-12 on Saturday afternoon before an announced crowd of 3,783 at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park, clinching the weekend series.
 
Gabe Roessler delivered the decisive blow, launching a two-run home run to left field after Bryce Cermenelli's RBI single snapped a 10-10 tie. Reserve catcher Bowen Tabola ignited the rally when he was hit by a pitch to open the inning against Louisiana reliever Cody Brasch (0-1).
 
After advancing to third on consecutive pitches, Tabola scored on Cermenelli's single to center before Roessler's drive gave the Bears (2-0) a three-run cushion.
 
Louisiana (0-2) answered in the bottom of the 11th. Blaze Rodriguez and Steven Spalitta drew walks off reliever Curry Sutherland, and freshman Colt Brown greeted Brock Lucas with a sharp single to load the bases. Pinch hitter Griffin Hebert and Lee Amadee each lifted sacrifice flies to trim the deficit to 13-12, but Lucas struck out Donovan LaSalle to secure his second save in as many days.
 
The Cajuns appeared in control early.
 
Senior left-hander Andrew Herrmann allowed two runs on two hits over five innings, and freshman right-hander Sawyer Pruitt surrendered one unearned run over the next two frames as the duo combined for 10 strikeouts through seven innings.
 
Trailing 2-0 in the third, Louisiana responded with five runs. Amadee tripled to open the inning and scored on Drew Markle's single. Freshman Noah Lewis followed with a bunt single, and Maddox Mandino reached on another bunt. The Cajuns then executed a double squeeze, with Rodriguez's third consecutive bunt hit scoring Markle and Lewis for a 3-2 lead. Spalitta capped the inning with a two-run single to left-center.
 
Mandino's two-run double in the fourth extended the advantage to 7-2. After Missouri State plated an unearned run in the seventh, Louisiana answered with three more runs in the bottom half, highlighted by LaSalle's two-run bloop single over shortstop Jax Ryan that pushed the lead to 10-3.

Missouri State mounted its comeback in the eighth against left-hander Tyler Papenbrock. The Bears capitalized on two walks and a hit batter, then received an RBI single from Charlie Carter and a two-run single from Caden Bogenpohl. Brasch entered and surrendered a two-out, two-run double to Bobby Atkinson as the Bears closed within 10-8.
 
In the ninth, Max Knight led off with a home run to right, and Ryan followed with a double. Brasch recorded two strikeouts before Roessler doubled down the right-field line to tie the game at 10.
 
Louisiana threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Rigoberto Hernandez was hit by a pitch with one out. After Amadee struck out, pinch-hitter Josh Lim stole second. LaSalle singled through the right side, but Cermenelli cut the ball off in shallow right field and threw Lim out at the plate to force extra innings.
 
Every Louisiana starter recorded at least one hit in a 15-hit effort. Mandino, Rodriguez, Spalitta, Brown, Hernandez, and LaSalle each had two hits. Missouri State finished with 14 hits, including nine after the seventh inning. Roessler, Bogenpohl, Taeg Gollert, Knight and Ryan each collected two hits.
 
The teams conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. Junior right-hander JR Tollett is scheduled to start for Louisiana as the Cajuns seek to avoid a sweep.
