Ragin’ Cajuns were ahead of ULM for 35 minutes until Warhawks staged late comeback
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion as ULM staged a late fourth-quarter comeback to snag a 61-51 win on Thursday, January 8 at the Cajundome.
Louisiana (1-14, 0-5 SBC) led through the first three quarters and remained in front with five minutes remaining – until the full effects of a game-ending 16-2 run by ULM (7-7, 2-3 SBC) changed the direction of the contest.
The Ragin' Cajuns were maintaining distance early on in the fourth quarter as a pair of Amijah Price free throws and a Mikaylah Manley jumper provided a five-point edge each time, the latter making it 48-43 with 6:36 left to play.
The two sides swapped points on the next two possessions, a Kahlen Norris free throw giving UL a 49-45 edge at 5:40. A triple and jumper from Asjah Inniss came on the next two ULM possessions after Norris' free throw and lifted the Warhawks into a 50-49 lead by the 4:51 mark.
The Warhawks defense then went into lockdown mode not allowing a point for the next four-plus minutes, preventing the Ragin' Cajuns from regaining the lead.
It was only a two-possession game, 53-49, as the clock dipped under three minutes to play as the Warhawks were only able to add three free throws during the first two minutes after claiming the lead.
Two missed free throws from the Ragin' Cajuns at 2:45 kept the momentum on ULM's side and the string of unanswered points swelled to 14 consecutive following two J'mani Ingram free throws which made it 59-49 in the visitors' favor with 1:12 remaining.
Prior to the Warhawks' late surge, the Ragin' Cajuns appeared headed for their first SBC win of the season after a commanding first half in which the squad built a lead as large as 27-11 and the defense held the Warhawks to just 22 percent shooting (7-of-32).
In the third quarter the lead remained at least six points and returned to double figures on a personal four-point spurt by Imani Daniel which stretched the Ragin' Cajuns advantage to 38-28 just inside of five minutes left in the frame.
The Ragin' Cajuns would lose their grip on the lead as the squad's offensive production was limited to only two field goal makes in the fourth quarter.
Thursday's contest was the first of two matchups over a 10-day span between Louisiana and ULM. The Ragin' Cajuns visit Monroe on January 17 to complete the annual SBC season series.
