Louisiana returns home to host Georgia State, Georgia Southern beginning on Thursday
BOONE, N.C. – Jaylen Tot scored 18 of his game-high 21 points during a seven-minute spurt in the second half to lead Appalachian State to a 72-58 Sun Belt Conference win over Louisiana in a Thursday afternoon contest at the Holmes Convocation Center.
Jaxon Olvera's steal and layup at the 8:15 mark gave Louisiana (5-16, 3-6 SBC) a 48-47 lead, but a half minute later, Tot was fouled on a three-point made bucket, with the ensuing free throw completing a four-point trip down court to give App State (12-9, 5-4 SBC) the lead for good.
Tot buried another triple to cap a 12-0 run before De'Vion Lavergne's jumper broke the streak with 5:25 left, and the Mountaineers built on the lead from there.
Joining Tot in double figures was Kason Jennings with 17 points, Michael Marcus Jr., with 13 and Wilson with 11. Jennings and Marcus each hit a trio of 3-pointers for the Mountaineers, who were 13-for-29 beyond the arc and 9 of 13 after intermission. Alonzo Dodd set a new season high with 10 assists and narrowly missed a double-double with eight points.
Dorian Finister led Louisiana with 16 points, while Lavergne had 13 points and seven assists. The Ragin' Cajuns hit only 2 of 12 shots from the three-point line after the break and finished 6-for-25 for the game.
Despite losing the rebounding battle to App State, 39-24, Louisiana had more second-chance points, leading in that category, 11-8. Todd Jones Jr., led the Ragin' Cajuns with seven rebounds while chipping in six points.
Louisiana also had an edge in points off turnovers, 14-9, committing only six miscues, tying for the lowest for Louisiana this season.
App State pulled away by shooting 68 percent in the second half and finishing at 52.1 percent overall.
With Louisiana's game at Old Dominion, scheduled for Saturday, postponed until February 16 due to expected inclement weather, the Ragin' Cajuns will return home for a pair of games beginning on Thursday (January 29) against Georgia State in a 7 p.m., contest.
