Three-Point Barrage Carries Troy Past Louisiana, 90-70

Ragin' Cajuns open four-game road swing on Wednesday at Texas State

LAFAYETTE – Troy used a 3-point barrage to take a big halftime lead and used a rebounding advantage to keep their distance as the Trojans never trailed in a 90-70 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns in a Sun Belt Conference game Saturday afternoon in the Cajundome.

Thomas Dowd led six Troy (11-6, 4-1 SBC) in double figures with 15 points. Brothers Cooper and Cobi Campbell combined for seven 3-pointers in the first half and scored 12 points each. Victor Valdez also scored 12 points for the Trojans while Kerrington Kiel and Jerell Bellamy chipped in 11 apiece.

Dorian Finister led Louisiana (4-14, 2-4 SBC), tying his career high with 25 points. The New Orleans junior connected on 8 of 12 shots from the field, including 3-for-5 from beyond the 3-point line. Dariyus Woodson came off the bench and had his second straight game in double digits, finishing with 13 points.

Dowd had eight rebounds to lead Troy to an overwhelming 43-18 advantage on the boards.  The Trojans used 18 offensive rebounds to score 30 second-chance points in the contest.  Woodson led the Ragin' Cajuns in rebounding with three.

The Campbell brothers combined for the first nine points of the game – all from behind the 3-point line – and never trailed. Finister scored five straight points for Louisiana to cut the lead to four, but a second-chance 3-pointer by Dowd midway through the first half gave Troy a 24-12 lead, and the Ragin' Cajuns could not get any closer the rest of the game.

Troy shot 54 percent for the game, including a blistering 17-for-29 from 3-point range, with the Campbell brothers each converting on four 3-pointers. Dowd added three 3-pointers for the Trojans, with Kiel, Valdez and Austin Cross hitting two each. The Trojans assisted on 25 of their 33 field goals.

Louisiana shot a respectable 46 percent for the day, while converting 10 of 25 (40 percent) attempts from beyond the 3-point line.

The game wrapped up the five game homestand for Louisiana, which will now hit the road for four straight beginning on Wednesday at Texas State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
