Ragin’ Cajuns seventh inning rally undone by misfortune in the eighth inning
TROY, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team experienced a 180 turn in emotions late Friday night at Troy, experiencing the thrill of a comeback to force extra innings and the heartbreak of defeat the very next inning in falling 5-4 (8 inn.) in the series opener at Troy.

Down to the last out in the seventh inning trailing 4-2, three straight Ragin' Cajuns reached base setting up Cecilia Vasquez (1-for-4, double, 2 RBI) for a two-run double that knotted the score.

Mallory Wheeler (2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER) continued her shutdown relief effort by retiring the Trojans (24-16, 5-5 SBC) in order in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Â
Louisiana (18-18, 4-6 SBC) appeared to be in a position for continue the game to another frame, and work around a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth, when a double play ball was induced.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns plans were undone, though, as an errant throw on the relay to first for the potential double play sailed wide allowing the Trojans' pinch runner to score the tiebreaking run from third base.

It was the second straight Friday that UL experienced the agony of a walk-off defeat in a Sun Belt series opener. This time one week ago, Coastal Carolina rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to snag victory from Louisiana.

The Ragin' Cajuns fell in extra innings for the first time this season and dropped to 0-3 in one-run games in conference play.

Louisiana had controlled play for the first four innings as Tyra Clary (5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 K) kept the Trojans batters off-balance. She headed to the fifth inning having yielded just two hits and facing only two over the minimum.

Clary's teammates built a 2-0 edge for her after Mia Liscano's heads-up baserunner in the third placed her in position to score on a grounder and an inning later Erin Ardoin delivered a two-out RBI double.

Troy's Alyssa Faircloth prevented Louisiana from extending the lead in the fourth inning as she dialed up a timely strikeout with runners at second and third for the final out.

In the fifth, the host-Trojans flipped the scoreboard with a pair of home runs, the latter a two-run launch from Makaley Boswell that pulled Troy ahead 3-2 and presented UL with its first deficit of the contest.

A leadoff home run from Caiden Oliva to start the bottom of the sixth proved to be valuable for the Trojans an inning later.

Vasquez reclaimed the team lead in RBI as her seventh inning heroics increased her season total to 31 RBI. It marked the sixth time in the past 11 bases-loaded situations the Cajuns posted a hit (since ULM series).

Hayden opened the game with a single for the 11th time, a hit which extended her hitting streak to eight games which is one off her season-best streak.

Liscano moving from first to third in the third inning off of Emily Smith's single set up Sam Roe for her team-best 15th RBI in SBC play. The fourth-inning double marked Ardoin's first extra base hit in SBC action.

Wheeler turned in a second consecutive strong relief effort, following up the one-run, five-inning stint last Sunday at Coastal Carolina. In her last two relief outings, she's yielded just six hits and one earned run over a 7-2/3 innings stretch.

Due to forecasted inclement weather that's expected to pass through the Troy, Alabama region on Sunday, Louisiana and Troy will play a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 5 to conclude the series at the Troy Softball Complex.

The twinbill brings a close to the first half of conference play for both teams. UL seeks to claim its first road SBC series win (lost at Marshall & Coastal).
