Louisiana to host Southern, McNeese in midweek; will open SBC play against Troy
LAFAYETTE – A three-run first inning by No. 21-ranked Dallas Baptist before a leadoff homer in the second by Nathan Humphreys was too much to overcome as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns dropped an 8-2 decision in the rubber game of a three-game series on Sunday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Humphreys and Tom Poole each had three hits, including a double and home run, as DBU (11-4) led 4-0 after two innings. Rian Schwede (4-0) tossed 7.0 innings for the Patriots, scattering six hits and striking out four.
Humphreys led off the game with a single and scored from first two pitches later on Grant Jay's RBI double into the left field corner. Two batters later, Poole homered to right field off Louisiana starter Tate Hess (1-2) to give DBU a 3-0 lead.
After Humphreys' homer in the second, Hess would settle down as he allowed one base runner over the next 3.0 innings before the Patriots struck for three runs in the fifth.
The Ragin' Cajuns opened the fourth inning with a leadoff single by Brooks Wright followed by a bloop single by Caleb Stelly before Wright scored to cut the DBU lead to 4-1. Louisiana, which recorded four straight innings with a leadoff hit but stranded 10 runners on base, was limited to five runners on base after Wright's run before Connor Cuff's solo home run in the ninth.
Lee Amedee and Jose Torres had two hits each for Louisiana, which finished with 10 in the game. Hess pitched 4.0 innings in the start – his third of the season – and scattered seven hits with three strikeouts.
Wil Taylor, Aidan Grab, Drew Kirby, Matt Osteen and James Trimble each pitched 1.0 inning for Louisiana with Grab and Osteen each fanning a batter in their respective collegiate debut.
Louisiana will continue its nine-game homestand with a five-game week beginning on Tuesday (March 11) against Southern. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. with fans able to listen to the game on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
The Ragin' Cajuns will play in-state opponent McNeese on Wednesday (March 12) in a 6 p.m. game before opening Sun Belt Conference play beginning on Friday (March 14) against nationally-ranked Troy. The final four games of the week will be streamed live on ESPN+.
