Louisiana hosts McNeese on Wednesday in final tuneup before SBC play

LAFAYETTE – Caleb Stelly's RBI single in the eighth inning snapped a 5-5 tie before adding an insurance run on a wild pitch as Louisiana defeated in-state foe Southern University, 7-5, on Tuesday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
 
Stelly went 3-for-4 at the plate as Louisiana (8-9) was limited to six hits on the night but took advantage of 10 walks and seven hit batters issued by Southern (7-7) pitchers.
 
Louisiana scored four of its runs without the benefit of a base hit as Griffin Hebert scored from third on Mark Collins' RBI grounder to short in the first, Lee Amedee was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth before Hebert scored his second run of the night on a wild pitch.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns tied the game in the seventh after Conor Higgs, Stelly and Connor Cuff were each hit by pitches before Brooks Wright would draw a one-out, bases-loaded walk. Louisiana would take the lead in the eighth after Owen Galt reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a walk to Higgs and scored on Stelly's RBI single to center off Jaguar reliever Peyton Huff (1-1).
 
Wil Taylor, Dylan Theut and Andrew Herrmann (2-1) combined to pitch the final 4.0 innings in relief for Louisiana, with Herrmann pitching the final 2.0 innings to earn the win.
 
Southern managed three hits in the game – the last coming on Taj Bates' single to left in the third. Louisiana turned a season-high three doubles plays but issued 10 walks among seven pitchers while committing four errors.
 
Louisiana will host in-state opponent McNeese on Wednesday in a 6 p.m. game. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
