Ardoin has three-hit night; series resumes Saturday at 2 p.m.
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana was one strike away from a win over No. 21-ranked Dallas Baptist in the top of the ninth inning before the Patriots scored three times to take a two-run lead. But one pitch was all junior Luke Yuhasz would need to lead an epic comeback.
Yuhasz's two-run double into the right-center field gap would cap a three-run inning and Louisiana earned a 6-5 walk-off victory over the Patriots before an announced crowd of 4,513 on Friday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
The three-game series resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Sam Ardoin went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI while Yuhasz and Jose Torres had two hits each as Louisiana (7-7) took a 3-2 lead in the seventh before DBU (9-4) would plate three runs in the ninth.
Reliever Dylan Theut allowed only one base runner – a seventh-inning walk – when he entered the game in the sixth inning. The left-hander fanned his first two batters in the ninth and got a 1-and-2 count on DBU's Nathan Humphreys before the leadoff hitter reached on a double to right.
After Theut issued an intentional walk to Grant Jay, Tom Poole was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Chayton Krauss's two-run bloop single to right gave the Patriots a 4-3 lead. A wild pitch to Michael Dattalo would allow Poole to score from third for a 5-3 lead before Alex Rosario (1-0) got Dattalo to ground out to third.
Louisiana would come back in the bottom half of the frame when Conor Higgs' bouncer got past Poole for a single before Torres hit an opposite-field single to right to put runners on the corners. Freshman Mark Collins, who drove in a pair of runs on RBI grounders, would reach on a fielder's choice with Higgs scoring to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Ardoin would follow with a hit-and-run single to right to send Collins to third before Yuhasz's double off DBU reliever Nick Bonn (1-2) gave Louisiana its first walk-off victory of the season.
Matthew Holzhammer made his first career start for Louisiana and struck out four batters and scattered three hits in 3.0 innings of work. Andrew Herrmann relieved Holzhammer in the fourth inning and pitched 2.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Louisiana took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, getting a leadoff walk from Drew Markle before recording his sixth stolen base of the season. Higgs would move Markle over on a sacrifice bunt and Torres' RBI grounder to short would break the scoreless contest.
DBU rallied to tie the game in the top of the third after Landon Underhill reached on an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a error. Humphreys' grounder to second allowed Underhill to score before Holzhammer would strand a runner at first.
Krauss, who went 3-for-5 at the plate, would DBU a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning when he hit a leadoff homer to left off Herrmann.
Louisiana would answer in the seventh inning with a leadoff single by Owen Galt and a walk to Higgs to chase DBU starter Micah Bucknam. Both runners would move into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt by Torres and Collins would follow with an RBI grounder to third.
Ardoin would then follow with an RBI single up the middle off DBU's Mason Peters for a 3-2 lead before Louisiana stranded two runners on after a Peters' strikeout.
