Louisiana Pushes Auburn to the End in Jane B. Moore Memorial Finale

3/2/2025 4:57:00 PM | Softball

Ragin’ Cajuns had opportunity to overtake the Tigers in the seventh inning

AUBURN, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team battled No. 19 Auburn into the late innings again on Sunday, March 2, getting the go-ahead run aboard in the seventh inning before the Tigers could hold on for a 4-3 victory in the finale of the Jane B. Moore Memorial Tournament in Auburn, Alabama.

Behind another stellar relief effort from Bethaney Noble (5.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 K) and a defense that turned a season-high four double plays, the Ragin' Cajuns (11-6) were in the heat of the battle in a 4-2 contest entering the seventh inning.

After Gabbie Stutes (2-for-4, RBI) hustled for an infield single with two outs in the top of the seventh the deficit was trimmed to one run, and as a result of the play the Cajuns had enough runners on base to pull ahead.

Auburn (19-1) would fight off the Ragin' Cajuns late pushback, which began with Cecilia Vasquez singling with one out to start the seventh, by inducing a pop up to prevent the game from continuing.

Louisiana wound up with a near-miss of adding to its season total of comeback wins which stood at two entering the day (Ole Miss, Houston).

Noble, who finished the tournament yielding just three runs over 12-1/3 innings of relief, gave her teammates a chance at a win over Auburn a second straight day. She refused to give in during the sixth inning when the Tigers had a chance to extend the lead, inducing an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Louisiana was in the driver's seat after its first at bat. Maddie Hayden drew a walk and then used her speed on a passed ball, ground out and wild pitch to slide across home plate for a 1-0 lead. UL had a chance to tack on additional runs, but Auburn starting pitcher Icess Tresvik escaped further damage by retiring Stutes with two runners on base.

Just as they did Saturday, the Tigers put the Cajuns in recovery mode after their first trip to the plate, though it seemed Louisiana would escape unscathed after turning the initial double play of the contest.

Auburn would refuse to be turned away early as three consecutive two out hits led to three runs which chased UL's starting pitcher Tyra Clary (0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB) from the circle.

AU reliever SJ Geurin (5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 4 K) would protect the lead as she held the Ragin' Cajuns in check until a leadoff single from Hayden in the fifth led to a run that sliced the Tigers' lead to 4-2.

Stutes picked up her third multiple-hit game and brought her average back to the .400 mark. Hayden collected career hit No. 198 and the two runs scored moved her into the team lead with 17 runs scored this season.

Kayla Falterman's single in the fifth inning allowed her to extend her season-long streak of reaching base to 17 consecutive games.

The four double plays turned by the Cajuns defense surpassed the previous season-best of three against Seton Hall in the season opener. UL now has 17 double plays turned in 17 games climbing back to the top nationally in total and per game average.

Auburn remained perfect (4-0) at home all-time against Louisiana. The Tigers increased their all-time series lead to 5-2 with the Jane B. Moore Memorial Tournament two-game sweep.

UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
Louisiana continues the first leg of its current 15-game road trip with a midweek game in Starkville, Mississippi on Wednesday, March 5 and the final non-conference tournament of the season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from Friday-Saturday, March 7-8.

The Ragin' Cajuns meeting with Mississippi State is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday (March 5) at Nusz Park. UL seeks to avenge last season's doubleheader loss to the Bulldogs in Starkville.

Louisiana meets Iowa and Alabama once each day during the Spring Break Showdown at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Head coach Alyson Habetz returns to where her collegiate coaching journey began, serving as an assistant and associate head coach for Alabama from 1999-2023.
