No. 22 Mississippi State produces multiple runs each at bat in building distance from Louisiana
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team was unable to keep up with the 22nd-ranked Mississippi State squad which posted multiple runs each inning in carving out a 14-1 (5 inn.) win on Wednesday, March 5 at Nusz Park in Starkville, Mississippi.
The loss was the third straight for Louisiana (11-7) – all against SEC competition – on the first leg of its current 15-game road trip. The Cajuns will look to bounce back when their 10-day stay away from campus ends this weekend at the Spring Break Showdown in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Behind multiple-run home runs posted in the first and second inning, Mississippi State (19-3) quickly raced out a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs, who wound up with 11 hits over their first two at bats, tacked on three more runs before the second inning finished for a double-digit lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns hopped on the board in the third inning after Savannah White (walk) and Maddie Hayden (single) reached base in succession to start off. That set the stage for Cecilia Vasquez to deliver an RBI single making it 10-1.
MSU regained its double-digit lead, and preserved the run rule margin, following a pinch hit, two-run home run from Ella Wesolowski in the bottom of the third.
Vasquez collected her team-leading 21st RBI of the season, a total which represents a new personal single-season best for the junior shortstop.
Hayden picked up career hit No. 199 on her single in the third inning. She's now on the doorstep of joining older sister Haley Hayden (2014-17) in reaching 200 collegiate hits as a Ragin' Cajun.
Bethaney Noble (1.0 IP, 6 H, 7 R) was charged with the loss, stepping out of her reliever's role with her first start since Feb. 16 vs. Ole Miss. The Cajuns pitching staff yielded season-highs in runs allowed (14) and hits allowed (17).
Mississippi State extended its series win streak over Louisiana to three games, Wednesday's result following up last February's doubleheader sweep at Nusz Park.
