Cajuns strand 13-plus runners for second straight night; will open SBC play against Troy
LAFAYETTE – True freshman Brooks Wright recorded his second, three-hit night of the season, going 3-for-5 with an RBI while Maddox Mandino went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, but Louisiana stranded 13 runners on base and dropped a 4-2 midweek contest to McNeese on Wednesday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Seth Fontenot went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs while eight pitchers kept Louisiana (8-10) off balance in leading McNeese (12-3) to its first season sweep in the series since 2003.
The Cowboys scored runs in their first two innings as Mack Brousseau's single to center scored leadoff hitter Connor Westenburg for a 1-0 lead before Easton Dowell reached on a two-out error in the second and scored on Fontenot's RBI single through the left side.
Louisiana, which stranded 14 runners in a 7-5 win over Southern on Tuesday, tied the game in the first when Wright lined a double just inside third base to plate Mandino from second. The Ragin' Cajuns trailed 2-1 after two innings before Mandino scored on Lee Amedee's RBI grounder up the first-base line.
McNeese would break the tie in the fourth as Larry Edwards Jr., led off the inning with a single off Louisiana starting pitcher Blake McGehee (1-3) before moving to second on Davis Meche's sacrifice bunt. The Cowboys would put runners on the corners and take a 3-2 lead on Simon Larranaga's infield RBI grounder.
Fontenot followed with a two-out single through the right side to plate Dowell for a 4-2 lead.
Louisiana threatened in the ninth inning as Wright beat out an infield single and moved to third on Caleb Stelly's double down the left-field line, but McNeese reliever Brady Corcoran would get a pop-up and ground out to record his first save.
Cooper Golden (1-1), the second of McNeese's eight pitchers in the game, earned the victory for the Cowboys. McGehee scattered five hits and three earned runs for the Ragin' Cajuns with Matt Osteen, Mandino and Aidan Grab combining to allow three hits and no runs over the final 5.0 innings.
Louisiana will open Sun Belt Conference play beginning on Friday (March 14) when it plays host to No. 21-ranked Troy (13-4) in a three-game series. First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the series resuming on Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1.
All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network.
