Second game of three-game series set for Saturday at 5 p.m.
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Andrew Herrmann pitched 5.1 innings of effective relief, scattering three hits and striking out six, but No. 21-ranked Troy belted a pair of home runs and benefited from a controversial call at the end to hold on for a 4-3 win in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams on Friday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
The second game of the three-game series is set for Saturday at 5 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Garrett Gainous (3-0) and two relievers held Louisiana (8-11, 0-1 Sun Belt) to four hits in the game. Brooks Bryan's three-run homer in the third gave Troy (14-4, 1-0 Sun Belt) the lead before Sean Darnell hit a solo shot in the fourth for a 4-2 lead.
Louisiana scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning after Jose Torres' bases-loaded single scored Caleb Stelly and Brooks Wright. Stelly would cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth when his double to left scored Conor Higgs.
Herrmann, who relieved starter Matthew Holzhammer (0-2) in the fourth inning, gave up an opposite-field single to Bryan before retiring the next 11 batters in order. The southpaw worked out of a jam in the seventh after Gavin Schrader's one-out triple by striking out Peyton Watts and getting Jakob Wax to hit an infield pop-up.
Bryan, who went 3-for-5 at the plate, hit a two-out double to right in the ninth, but Blake Cavill was thrown out at the plate.
Conor Higgs reached on a one-out single in the ninth off Trojan reliever Jay Dill to set up the tying run before being lifted for pinch-runner Mark Collins. Stelly, the following batter, would strike out on an attempted hit-and-run, but was called for batter interference with Collins declared out on the play.
Gainous scattered three hits and struck out five in 5.0 innings to earn the win. Colby Frieda pitched 3.0 hitless innings of relief before Dill fanned two batters in the ninth for his second save.
