Louisiana resumes SBC play against Texas State, ULM

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Nubia Benedith and Erica Lafayette combined for 28 points while the Ragin' Cajuns forced 18 turnovers, but Miami's Amber Tretter blocked a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer as the RedHawks held on for a 60-59 overtime victory in the SBC-MAC Challenge on Saturday at the Cajundome.

Benedith scored a team-high 15 points to lead Louisiana (10-12), which dropped its two games in the SBC-MAC Challenge by a combined three points. Lafayette added 13 points for the Ragin' Cajuns, who played their second consecutive overtime contest of the season and third in the last eight games.

Louisiana led 53-49 on Ashlyn Jones' two free throws with 2:26 remaining before Tretter had a free throw and bucket to cut the lead to 53-52 with 1:06 left. The Ragin' Cajuns pushed their lead to 55-52 on a pair of free throws by Lanay Wheaton, but Miami's Tamar Singer would tie the game with a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining.

In overtime, Enjulina Gonzalez scored on a mid-range jumper before Maya Chandler's 3-pointer gave the RedHawks a 60-55 lead with 2:14 left. The Ragin' Cajuns would answer with Benedith scored on a jumper with 1:46 left before a jumper by Lafayette would close the gap to 60-59.

Louisiana forced a missed jumper by Gonzalez with Tamiah Robinson pulling down the rebound. The Ragin' Cajuns would turn the ball over on the ensuing inbounds but eventually force a five-second violation to get a pair of attempts at the game-winner.

Robinson's contested rebound off a Benedith miss would give the ball to Louisiana, but Tretter blocked Wheaton's jumper from the left baseline to preserve the RedHawk win.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored the first six points of the game with Lafayette scoring a pair of baskets with Skylah Travis scoring on a fast break before increasing their lead to 10-2 on a jumper by Wheaton with 6:50 left in the first quarter.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Gonzalez and Chandler quickly closed the gap to 10-8 before Louisiana built an 18-14 lead after the first quarter.

A pair of free throws by Travis gave Louisiana a 24-17 lead with 4:18 remaining in the second period before Miami used a 9-1 win to take its first lead of the game on Cori Lard's bucket with 1:43 left in the half.

Jones made the second of two free throws with 47.0 seconds left in the half to tie the game before the RedHawks Lakresha Edwards hit consecutive 3-pointers, including a buzzer beater at the half, for a 32-26 lead.

Miami took its biggest lead at 34-26 on Katey Richason's bucket with 9:25 remaining in the third quarter before Louisiana scored the next nine points with Travis' putback off her own miss putting the Ragin' Cajuns back up, 35-34.

Singer scored a career-high 17 points to lead Miami, which finished 2-0 in the SBC-MAC Challenge after opening with a 75-48 win against App State on November 4. Gonzalez added 11 points for the RedHawks, who entered the game leading the MAC and ranked 25th nationally in scoring defense (55.8 points) while Tretter hauled in 11 rebounds.

Jones and Travis scored eight points each for Louisiana with Robinson pulling down 10 boards – her most since grabbing 12 rebounds in the season-opener at Northern Illinois on November 4. Robinson added six steals for the Ragin' Cajuns with Travis adding seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
