Cajuns Collect Win in Resumption of Sun Belt Play

Louisiana tops Texas State by scoring inside and capitalizing on turnovers forced

LAFAYETTE – An 11-0 run in the fourth quarter allowed the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team to fight off both a rigid third quarter and Texas State, leading the squad to a 71-54 win on Wednesday, February 12 at the Cajundome.

The decisive run stretched a slim 46-43 lead into the team's first double-figure advantage since the first quarter.

Forwards Ashlyn Jones and Kamryn Jones scored layups 48 seconds apart to widen the gap to 51-43 with 8:27 left to play. Then the Ragin' Cajuns guard trio of Tamiah Robinson, Nubia Benedith and Erica Lafayette, who combined for 49 points, took over to clinch the win for Louisiana (11-12, 7-6 SBC).

Robinson's offensive putback at 8:01 returned the lead to double figures for good, 53-43. Another Robinson score and Benedith's driving layup at 5:21 finished off the run.

Texas State (10-14, 4-9 SBC) broke the run with a three-point play at 5:10, then the UL guard trio went back to work with the final daggers to the Bobcats' hopes.

After two Benedith free throws made it 59-46, Robinson and Lafayette together combined to score baskets on three straight possessions within a one-minute span starting with Robinson's driving layup at 3:03 and ending with Lafayette's baseline drive for a three-point play that increased the margin to 66-50.

The guard takeover in the fourth quarter was the push the Ragin' Cajuns needed to speed up the game and chase away the Bobcats after a foul-plagued third quarter (15 combined fouls) limited the Cajuns to adding only one point to its halftime lead.

The path to the halftime lead started with a dominating open that saw the Cajuns reel off five straight makes and seven total in the first eight minutes of play to lay claim to an 18-5 advantage. Texas State battled back, and late took a 23-22 lead in the second quarter, by running off an 18-4 run sparked by a combined four three-point makes from Saniya Burns and Ja'Mia Harris.

The first warning sign of the Cajuns guard takeover came in the final two minutes of the second quarter and it snapped the team out of and second-quarter funk and into the lead for good. Robinson drove through the lane for a three-point play at 1:13 that pulled UL ahead 27-25, then an offensive rebound led to her scoring a second-chance basket at 0:11 that created separation at halftime.

The win returned Louisiana above the .500 mark in SBC play and strengthen their foothold in the top half of the standings. The Cajuns are assured of entering the weekend in sixth place in the 14-team ledger.

Robinson led the way with a game-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting, closely followed by Benedith whose 17 points pushed her past the 500-point threshold as a Ragin' Cajun. Lafayette scored in double figures for the 12th time in 13 SBC games, producing 14 points.

Protecting the ball kept the Cajuns from any trouble in the game, the team committing only eight turnovers – with point guards Robinson and Benedith having only one miscue between them – while turning the Bobcats over 20 times which led to a commanding 25-4 advantage in points off of turnovers.

Louisiana shot 51 percent (25-of-49) and punished the Bobcats with 42 points in the paint. The Cajuns attempted just two three-pointers the entire 40 minutes of play.

UL defeated Texas State for the third straight meeting and improved to 8-6 all-time in Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns moved to 14-8 against the Bobcats in SBC regular season play.
