Ragin’ Cajuns provide Alyson Habetz her first wins as a head coach
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team posted a two-game sweep of action on Day 3 of the 39th Annual Louisiana Classic at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park, defeating Seton Hall and George Mason by an identical 9-1 (6 inn.) score.
Sam Ryan (6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER) set the tone in the circle by scattering five hits, with an unearned being the only blemish, while offensively Kayla Falterman (3 RBI), Emily Smith (2 RBI) and Gabbie Stutes (2 RBI) each recorded multiple-RBI efforts in the win over Seton Hall.
It was a two-run triple by the hometown product Stutes (Lafayette, La./St. Thomas More) that set the stage for Falterman's walk-off squeeze bunt to seal the first win as a head coach for program alum Alyson Habetz.
The Ragin' Cajuns (2-2) were well on their way to exacting revenge on Seton Hall (2-2) in the second inning when Falterman's two-run single and Smith's two-run homer to deep right field capped off a five-run barrage – all with two outs – that expanded the lead to 6-0.
After the break in play between games, Louisiana quickly picked up where it left off scoring six runs in its first at bat against George Mason. A half inning after starting the team's fifth ground ball double play of Opening Weekend, Cecilia Vasquez started the scoring with a two-run double to left center.
Run-scoring singles from Laney Credeur, Erin Ardoin and Savannah White later followed before the Patriots could record the next out.
Tyra Clary (5.1 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 2 K) worked into the sixth inning, collecting the timely outs each time the Patriots got runners aboard. She finished with four straight scoreless innings pitched after the lone GMU tally came in the second inning.
Falterman went 3-for-3 in the nightcap to wrap up a 5-for-6 day. Vasquez's two RBI led a contingent of six Cajuns with at least one RBI.
Eight players combined for the Cajuns' 12 hits off of GMU pitching, following up the 11-hit performance in Saturday's opener vs. Seton Hall.
