Ragin’ Cajuns excelled in all facets of the game to put away Longwood in Louisiana Classic finale
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team closed the 39th Annual Louisiana Classic with a third consecutive convincing win, downing Longwood 8-1 on Sunday, February 9 at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
The Ragin' Cajuns (3-2) received at least one hit from their Nos. 1-6 hitters, the top three in the lineup combined for seven runs scored and freshman Mallory Wheeler (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 4 K) pitched a shutout at the visiting Lancers (2-3) for 5-2/3 innings in her first collegiate start.
Wheeler would retire the first six batters that she faced. During that time the offense began to quickly stack up runs.
The run production started in the first inning a third straight game, again Kayla Falterman (1-for-1, 2 R, 2 SAC) leading the way as her on base streak continued. Falterman drew a key one-out walk and two batters later was brought home with the first run on Emily Smith's RBI single.
The Cajuns added an RBI grounder off a ball that Laney Credeur shoved to shortstop and RBI single from Sam Roe for a 3-0 edge, chasing away Longwood starting pitcher Erin Kirkland before the opening inning expired.
Louisiana use the bunt game to gain another tally in the very next at bat, Maddie Hayden (2-for-3, 3 R, SB) leading off with a single and stealing second, Falterman executing the sacrifice bunt to move her to third to set up Cecilia Vasquez's sac fly.
After the Lancers fended off a scoring opportunity in the third, the Cajuns padded Wheeler's advantage in the fourth inning with Falterman again sacrificing Hayden to third followed an executed squeeze play from Vasquez (1-for-1, 2 R, SAC, SF, 3 RBI) making it 5-0.
Wheeler would not allow any Lancers baserunner to advance past second base until the sixth inning, and it took an error. An RBI single from Sophia Knock led the only blemish on the freshman pitcher's stat line.
The top of the lineup's highlight day was capped off in the bottom of the sixth after Hayden walked, Falterman blooped a double down the left field line and Vasquez poked an RBI single into left field. Credeur closed the scoring, and her three-RBI outing, with a two-run single providing Wheeler a comfortable 8-1 lead.
Falterman's performance capped off an opening weekend in which she batted .700 (7-of-10) and sported a .800 on base percentage. Vasquez increased her Week 1 RBI total to a team-leading seven, Sunday's showing marking her second multiple-RBI outing.
Wheeler exited her collegiate debut weekend with only a single run and eight hits allowed over 10-2/3 innings.
