Louisiana’s Late Push Withstood by Seton Hall in Season Opener

Ragin’ Cajuns had bases loaded in two-run game when final out was recorded in the final two innings
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team loaded the bases twice in the final two innings but Seton Hall held on for a 4-2 win in the opening game of the 2025 season on Thursday, February 6 at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
Louisiana (0-1) struck in its first at bat when freshman Emily Smith launched a solo home run to left field in her first collegiate at bat.
The Cajuns lead held until the third inning, that's when Seton Hall (1-0) was able to take advantage of early walks. The team's two free passes in the frame wound up coming around to score on a two-out single giving the visitors a 2-1 edge.
The Pirates gained additional separation in the fifth inning, again capitalizing on free passes that set up a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly increasing the margin to 4-1.
Louisiana began to put pressure on SHU in the sixth inning, starting with Maddie Hayden's leadoff bunt single that eventually led to Cecilia Vasquez's clutch two-out RBI single. Kayla Falterman walked to load the bases but the Pirates escaped with a fly ball out.
Mallory Wheeler induced the team's third double play of the contest to close the top of the seventh and the Cajuns went back to work loading the bases with Hayden, Laney Credeur and Emily Smith all reaching base with two outs.
The heroics would not come to fruition for UL as SHU's Kelsey Carr (7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 0 K) wrapped up her complete game victory with a foul ball out from Sam Roe.
Hayden started her senior season with a multiple-hit game (2-for-4) while Smith hit the only home run in the game. Pitching-wise, Tyra Clary protected the lead until six walks caught up with her and freshman Mallory Wheeler minimized the damage with three innings of scoreless relief.
The Cajuns defense rounded up three double plays which was the highlight of 16 assists recorded. Roe and Mia Liscano each collected five assists.
The loss spoiled the debut of program alum Alyson Habetz's debut as head coach.
