Early Offense Leads Texas Past Louisiana on Friday at Lamson

Top-ranked Longhorns built six-run cushion over first two innings
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team was one strike away from coming away unscathed in the top of the first, instead No. 1 Texas took hold of the game's momentum with a two-run home run from Reese Atwood and went on to claim an 8-0 (5 inn.) win on Friday, February 7 at Lamson Park.

The visiting Longhorns (2-0) plated four more runs in the second inning to widen the gap. Meanwhile pitcher Teagan Kavan yielded only one hit in her four innings of work to preserve the distance from the Ragin' Cajuns (0-2).

Sam Ryan tossed 3-2/3 innings of solid relief to slow down the Texas offense. She worked a clean frame in the third inning and surrendered three hits and a single earned run following the Longhorns' early uprising.

Louisiana threatened to chip away at Kavan's stranglehold in the bottom of the third when Dayzja Williams poked a one-out single up the middle, was sacrificed to second base and Kayla Falterman and Emily Smith drew two-out walks. Kavan danced out of the potential harm with a check swing strikeout.

Texas' first two batters in the fourth reached base setting in motion for runs to score on an RBI single and errant throw on a double play attempt to reach the run rule margin. Kavan and Citlaly Gutierrez combined to retire the last six Cajuns batters to end the game early.

The Cajuns solid defensive work continued highlighted by Savannah White collecting her second caught stealing of a baserunner in as many attempts on the young season.

Bethaney Noble (1.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 1 K) Â gave UL the chance at a scoreless frame to start inducing a grounder and fly out for two quick outs, but her fortune was changed after a two-out walk and near-miss of an inning-ending strikeout.

Friday's result extended the Ragin' Cajuns wait for rewarding program alum and head coach Alyson Habetz with her first win.

Louisiana takes in a pair of games on Saturday, February 8 in the 39th Annual Louisiana Classic at Lamson Park, starting at 3:30 p.m. with a rematch against Seton Hall.
