Southpaw posts Louisiana's first complete game since 2022
LAFAYETTE – Andrew Herrmann, in his first appearance of the season, pitched Louisiana's first complete game on the mound since 2022 and the Ragin' Cajuns pounded out a season-high 13 hits in defeating No. 23-ranked Nebraska, 10-2, to complete a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
In the opener, Blake McGehee and Dylan Theut combined on a four-hitter and Conor Higgs had two hits, including his first homer of the season, as Louisiana earned a 4-1 win.
Louisiana (4-3) will open a five-game week beginning on Tuesday when it travels for the first time this season with a battle against in-state opponent McNeese. The Ragin' Cajuns will return home on Wednesday (February 26) to host Southeastern Louisiana before heading to the West Coast face UC Irvine in a three-game series.
GAME 1 – Louisiana 4, Nebraska 1
McGehee (1-1) struck out a career-best seven batters and held Nebraska hitless until Cayden Brumbaugh's two-out single in the third inning. The right-hander allowed four base runners in 5.0 innings before Theut pitched the final 4.0 innings to notch his first save since facing TCU on June 3, 2022 in the NCAA College Station Regional.
Louisiana struck first as Brooks Wright led off the first with a walk, moved to second on a stolen base and scored on Lee Amedee's RBI single over a drawn-in infield.
Higgs, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate and scored twice, extended Louisiana's lead to 2-0 in the fourth when he homered with two outs off Nebraska starter Ty Horn (0-1).
The Ragin' Cajuns scored twice in the seventh off a pair of Husker wild pitches as Higgs led off the inning with a double off reliever Caleb Clark. After Higgs moved to third on Drew Markle's sacrifice bunt, pinch-hitter Casey Artigues would strike out but reach first on a wild pitch and allowing Higgs to score for a 3-0 advantage.
Pinch-runner Mark Collins then stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored when Carson Jasa's pitch bounced in front of the plate.
Theut allowed a pair of hits and struck out six in his second appearance of the season for Louisiana.
Dylan Carey helped Nebraska avert a shutout in the opener as his ninth-inning double into the left-field corner scored Devin Nunez. Horn took the loss for the Cornhuskers after allowing a pair of runs and scattering four hits in 6.0 innings of work.
GAME 2 – Louisiana 10, Nebraska 2
Herrmann (1-0), making his first appearance of the season, recorded Louisiana's first complete game since Jacob Schultz's 142-pitch performance against Texas State in the semifinals of the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Championships.
The southpaw allowed five hits and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in a 117-pitch performance. Herrmann allowed one base runner (hit-by-pitch) through the first three innings before Carey broke up the no-hit bid in the fourth on a one-out single to left.
Herrmann would all of the runs he would need in the second inning as Louisiana scored five times and capitalized on a pair of Nebraska errors – its first two of the season.
Higgs led off the second inning for the Ragin' Cajuns when he singled off Nebraska starter Will Walsh (1-1) and Trip Dobson was hit by a pitch. The duo would score one batter later when Collins reached on a bunt single and advanced to third on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Owen Galt followed with an RBI double to right to plate Collins and scored from third on Sam Ardoin's attempted sacrifice bunt which was misplayed for an error. Markle would keep the inning going with a single through the left side and freshman Kasen Bellard would lift a sacrifice fly to right to plate Ardoin for an unearned run.
Louisiana extended its lead to 8-1 in the fourth as Jose Torres scored on Markle's RBI single, Wright hit a sacrifice fly and Caleb Stelly had an RBI groundout.
Torres gave Louisiana a 9-1 lead in the fifth with an RBI single and Griffin Hebert's RBI fielder's choice in the sixth would drive in Stelly.
Five players had two hits in the nightcap for Louisiana with Markle, Stelly and Galt each going 2-for-5. Higgs was 2-for-4 to the Ragin' Cajuns while Torres was 2-for-3.
The Cornhuskers scored a run in the fourth on Will Jesske's RBI triple and added a run in the ninth on Nunez's solo home run just inside the right-field foul pole. Walsh, one of seven pitchers used by Nebraska in the nightcap, gave up five runs (four earned) and allowed four hits in 2.0 innings.
