Ragin’ Cajuns build 20-plus points halftime lead in cruising to Senior Day victory
LAFAYETTE – Four players scored in double figures, led by 22 points from Erica Lafayette, as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team honored their seniors with an 80-60 win over ULM on Saturday, February 15 in the Cajundome.
The Ragin' Cajuns (12-12, 8-6 SBC) remained above the .500 mark in SBC play, maintained its sixth place standing and closed within one game of fourth place following App State's third straight loss.
Saturday's win marked a fourth consecutive conference win at home for Louisiana and the squad's 10th overall inside the Cajundome this season.
Lafayette's game-leading points total came on an efficient 8-of-9 shooting while also pulling down six boards. Her seventh 20-plus outing upped her SBC-only average to 18.1, keeping pace with JMU's Peyton McDaniel (18.3) for the scoring crown in league play.
Skylah Travis also had a huge afternoon with 11 points and 12 rebounds, marking her second double-double in the past two weeks, and added five blocks. Lanay Wheaton provided 13 points off the bench while Tamiah Robinson finished with 10 points in the win.
Louisiana jumped out to a 7-2 advantage before back-to-back threes by the Warhawks put them ahead at 8-7. ULM led for all of 23 seconds before Lafayette's jumper put the Cajuns back on top.
Louisiana would never relinquish the lead. The sides exchanged buckets before the Cajuns closed the opening frame on a 9-3 run to lead by eight after 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Cajuns faced little resistance on the defensive end. They'd shoot 13-for-16 from the field, scoring 10 of the last 11 points of the quarter, and took a 48-27 lead into the half.
The Cajuns scored 26 points in the breakaway frame without attempting a three-point shoot or a free throw, only being fouled once in the quarter's final minute.
It was ULM who came out of the locker room firing on offense. They scored 10 of the first 12 to trim Louisiana's lead to 13. The Warhawks continued to have it going offensively and a three-pointer cut the Cajun lead to just 52-45.
Wheaton answered with a three and it was all Louisiana from there, closing the quarter on an 11-3 run to put things out of reach.
