Panthers establish lead from the start, hold off Ragin' Cajuns late push
WESTWEGO, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team was found chasing points early on as High Point unleashed a three-point barrage in the first half and was unable to catch up, falling 77-62 to the Panthers on Friday, November 28 in the Big Easy Classic at the Alario Center in Westwego, Louisiana.
High Point (6-1) connected on 10 three-point baskets during the first 20 minutes of action, with seven triples alone from the hands of Macy Spencer, in building a 43-30 edge by intermission.
Louisiana (0-6) shot 50 percent in the first quarter to be at arm's length even though the Panthers made four treys in the first five minutes. Imani Daniel's swipe and score at 4:28 lowered the deficit to 15-10.
The Ragin' Cajuns, who finished 7-of-14 in the first 10 minutes, were within 26-18 after inside baskets from Lily Ba and Mikaylah Manley after the first quarter – trailing only due to seven made three-pointers by HPU.
The Panthers were able to start stretching the lead out as their defense kept UL to four points over the first five minutes of the second quarter and advanced the lead to 36-22. Ba drained a couple of three-pointers afterwards during an 8-7 Cajuns push which kept the deficit manageable.
The three-point shot provided breathing room for HPU early on in the third quarter, back-to-back makes from Brecken Snotherly and Spencer triggering a 14-2 run that had the Panthers well out in front at 61-36 by the 3:40 mark.
Louisiana climbed back into the contest starting with scoring the final 10 points of the third quarter. Bianca Silva then stole an inbounds pass on the opening possession of the fourth quarter which led to a wide-open layup at 9:45 that made it 61-48.
The Panthers ended the 12-0 Cajuns run with a long outlet pass but the Ragin' Cajuns kept pushing as evident by a series of three consecutive offensive rebounds that led to a three-point play from Ba at 8:46. That capped off a quick four-point spurt which had UL on the verge of lowering the HPU lead to single digits at 63-52.
High Point shook off the Louisiana pushback with a pair of baskets in the seven-minute mark. Manley had a quick answer at 6:52 and it was 67-54, but a mere 13 seconds later Spencer dialed in her ninth and final triple starting a 9-2 Panthers run which grew the advantage back to the 20-point mark with 4:10 remaining to play.
Friday's defeat kept the Cajuns winless on the young season, six games into the 14th season of Garry Brodhead's tenure. It also kept UL winless in the Big Easy Classic (lost to Cleveland State and Minnesota in November 2024).
