Louisiana continues its West Coast swing on Friday at Santa Clara
STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford Cardinal used a 19-3 run over the final 5:32 of the first half to pull away from a one-point deficit and earn a 93-66 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Tuesday at Maples Pavilion.
Freshman Ebuka Okorie and Cameron Grant each hit a pair of 3-pointers during the run as Stanford (4-0) held Louisiana (1-4) without a field goal for five minutes to turn a 22-21 deficit into a 40-25 lead at the break.
Okorie continued his stellar freshman season by pouring in 26 points to lead the Cardinal, shooting 6-for-10 from the field and 11 of 13 from the free throw line. Chisom Okpara added 22 and Grant added 15, with all of his points coming from beyond the 3-point line (5-for-11).
They (Stanford) got back into transition, and we couldn't find Okorie and Okpara, Louisiana head coach Quannas White said of Stanford's first-half run. We just couldn't find them. And then they made a ton of threes. We had bad communication in transition. And then we let go of the rope.
We knew about Okorie coming in. He's highly talented, and we knew going into the game that we needed to try and stop him to get a hold of them. I thought we did a decent job early in the first half on him, getting him corralled and slowing him up a little bit in transition.
Freshman Joshua Lewis had a career-high 16 points to lead Louisiana. The Tampa, Fla., product was 8 of 14 from the field and added a season-high five rebounds. Jaxon Olvera added 15 points for the Cajuns, while Dorian Finister chipped in with 12. Olvera led the Cajuns in rebounding with six as Stanford held a 38-27 advantage on the boards.
The Cajuns finished 27-for-55 from the floor (49.1 percent) to outshoot from the Cardinal overall (27-for-56, 48.2 percent). The Ragin' Cajuns finished 2-for-9 from behind the 3-point line and were 10 of 17 from the free throw line. Stanford finished with a sizable advantage in both categories, converting 28 of 35 free throws and finishing 11-for-31 attempts from behind the 3-point arc.
I told my players after the game: 'You know, it doesn't stop. We gotta continue to try and prove who we are,' White said. We've got to take this game and learn from this, and then also learn how to not let go of the rope, so it doesn't happen again.
The game marked the first trip to California for the Cajuns since facing UCLA and Pepperdine in December, 2015. It marked Louisiana's first trip to the Bay Area since facing Northern Arizona, North Dakota State and San Francisco in the San Francisco Hilltop Challenge in November, 2011.
Louisiana continues its three-game California swing on Friday when it faces Santa Clara (5-0) in a 9 p.m. contest. The game will be available on ESPN+.
The pregame show on the Ragin' Cajuns Sports Network/Learfield begins at 8:30 p.m., from the Leavey Center. The game can be heard locally in the Lafayette area on 103.3 the GOAT/1420 AM and worldwide on the Varsity Network App.
