Start of a split week for the Ragin’ Cajuns who return home on Saturday

MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team takes a quick one-game road trip to Mobile, Alabama to meet South Alabama on Thursday, January 9 at the Mitchell Center.
 
The Cajuns-Jaguars matchup is slated to tip-off at 5:00 p.m. It's the first of two matchups between the teams in SBC play, with USA returning the visit on February 26 at the Cajundome.
 
Following the USA game, UL returns to the Cajundome on Saturday, January 11 vs. Southern Miss.
 
Louisiana (6-6, 2-1 SBC) has won the last three meetings in Mobile against South Alabama (4-10, 0-3 SBC) including last season's 74-42 triumph on Feb. 21, 2024.
 
Thursday's contest features the top two scorers in Sun Belt Conference play: Louisiana's Erica Lafayette and South Alabama's Amyria Walker, both players averaging 19.7 points per game in conference games.
 
The last time on the road the Cajuns broke through for their first road win of the season (Dec. 29 at Georgia Southern) and began their uptick on offense in SBC play with the first of three straight 60-plus point outings.

BOUNCE PASSES
  • Louisiana seeks it second SBC road win in as many tries and looks for its first 3-1 league start since 2021-22.
  • Through three SBC games, the Cajuns have upped their scoring average to 66.3 points per game (season average is 59.3) while improving their shooting to 44 percent.
  • In the two SBC wins, UL's defense held Georgia Southern and Georgia State to under 20 field goal makes and below 35 percent shooting. 
  • The trip to Mobile to meet South Alabama marks a string of six straight games against the SBC's western half.
  • Louisiana has won the last three meetings in Mobile including last season's 74-42 triumph on Feb. 21, 2024.
  • In each of the previous four matchups, overall, the Cajuns defense held South Alabama below 50 points.
  • UL regained the services of Nubia Benedith and Kamryn Jones plus Skylah Travis made her season debut last Thursday vs. JMU, giving the team 11 available players – the most active since the Nov. 29-30 Big Easy Classic.
  • Erica Lafayette has scored double digits in six straight games, averaging 17.2 points during the stretch. She's taken over the team lead in scoring at 13.2 points per game.
  • Erica Lafayette has scored 17-plus all three SBC games and has averaged 12 ppg in the first half in helping UL build a halftime lead each time. She's tied with USA's Amyria Walker for the lead with 19.7 ppg in SBC play.
  • UL has scored 60-plus all three SBC games with Tamiah Robinson averaging 3.0 ppg and Jaylyn James, last season's leading scorer in SBC play (12.1), yet to play.
  • The 27 points scored off of turnovers vs. JMU marked the most gained by the Cajuns since Nov. 8 vs. Loyola (30). The squad matched the mark again on Saturday against Georgia State.
  • The Ragin' Cajuns rank Top 25 nationally in turnovers forced (22.3), turning the opposition over 20-plus times in 10 of 12 games, including forcing No. 4 LSU into a season-high tying 21 turnovers and Auburn into 25 miscues.
  • Louisiana saw a season-best four players score in double figures on Dec. 18 vs. Auburn. Aasia Sam, who became the team's eighth graduate player after receiving her degree on Dec. 20, produced a season-high 10 points.
  • UL held its first five foes to 60 or below, has yielded 70-plus only once and is holding foes to 59.8 ppg so far.
  • UL led the SBC in scoring defense – and ranked Top 60 nationally – holding foes below 60 ppg the last two seasons.
  • Louisiana has experience on its side with a combined nine players who are either a graduate or senior.

The Ragin' Cajuns return home to the Cajundome on Saturday, January 11 to meet Southern Miss in a 2:00 p.m. contest. Admission is free and open to the public.

The USM contest is the second of three Saturday home games for UL in January and it precedes a stretch of four games solely against Arkansas State and Troy that wraps up the first half of league play.
 
Louisiana seeks its first win streak over Southern Miss since the Lady Eagles joined the SBC, and in the overall series history. The Cajuns claimed a 58-57 overtime win at the Cajundome last March, earning head coach Garry Brodhead his 200th career victory.
