Louisiana Posts Convincing Road Win Over South Alabama

1/9/2025 8:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Cajuns shoot near 50 percent throughout for largest margin of victory and third double-digit SBC win

MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team shot 54 percent in the first half to build a 20-point cushion and went on to cruise to a 76-50 win over South Alabama in a Sun Belt Conference game on Thursday, January 9 at the Mitchell Center in Mobile, Alabama.

The Ragin' Cajuns (7-6, 3-1 SBC) held onto the 20-plus point margin in the second half, growing the lead to as large as 30 points, in improving to 2-0 on the road in SBC play and securing the first 3-1 conference start since the 2021-22 season.

The defense held a SBC foe to less than 20 field goal makes and under 35 percent shooting for the third time in four games – all wins for UL – with South Alabama (4-11, 0-4 SBC) managing only six first-half makes and 15 total in the contest (15-of-50, 30 percent).

Ashlyn Jones scored five points in the first four minutes keeping Louisiana ahead at 7-5 before the pull away began. Erica Lafayette's triple at 5:55 and Tamiah Robinson's driving layup at 5:33 off a Jags turnover increased the lead to 12-5.

Beginning with a stepback jumper to in the final seconds of the first quarter, which moved the margin to double figures for good at 19-9, Robinson took over the game beginning the jaunt to a career-high tying 22 points. She hit a three-pointer to open the second quarter then scored back-to-back layups for an additional seven points that stretched the lead to 26-9 with 7:53 remaining before the half.

Robinson's hot stretch sparked the Cajuns shooting 60-plus percent over the middle quarters in levying 45 points on the Jaguars to reach the 60-point barrier prior to the fourth quarter.

It was a series of five straight makes that overlapped the end of the second and start of the third quarter which delivered the knockout punch. Lafayette closed the stretch with a jumper at 9:23 and triple at 8:52 of the third for a personal five-point spurt which upped the lead to 46-21.

Robinson followed with scores on back-to-back possessions increasing the edge to 50-23 by the 7:38 mark, then two minutes later two Nubia Benedith free throws had UL doubling up South at 54-27.

The defense limited USA's offense to five free throws over the final 4:43 of the third setting up Lafayette's jumper at 9:17 of the fourth creating the largest lead of the night at 64-34.

Louisiana picked up its fourth consecutive win in Mobile and registered its highest point total against a Division I opponent this season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Robinson shot an impressive 8-of-12 from the floor and added five free throw makes in posting her second 20-point outing of the season. It was her sixth double-figure scoring effort and matched her previous high (22) scored back in November vs. New Orleans.

Lafayette reached 17 points for the fourth time in as many SBC games, hitting the mark exactly with 7-of-17 shooting which included three 3-point makes.

Robinson charged the victory with 13 points in the first half. In the second half, she along with Lafayette and Lanay Wheaton each provided nine points.

Kamryn Jones' eight rebounds led a contingent of nine Cajuns with multiple boards leading to a 38-31 advantage over South Alabama on the glass.

The Cajuns bottled up South's Amyria Walker, and got her into foul trouble, limiting the leading scorer in SBC play to two points from free throws only and just five field goal attempts in holding her well below her 19.7 points per game average in conference play.
