Ragin’ Cajuns and Red Wolves one week removed from overtime duel in Jonesboro

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team returns home to the Cajundome on Thursday, January 23 for a rematch with Arkansas State. The contest begins at 6:00 p.m. and admission is free and open to the public.

Thursday's game is Student Organization Night, the organization with the highest attendance receiving a donation from head coach Garry Brodhead.

It's the second straight week the Ragin' Cajuns (8-8, 4-3 SBC) and Red Wolves (10-7, 6-1 SBC) meet in a weekday contest. ASU claimed a last-second, 67-65 overtime win in Jonesboro, Arkansas on January 15.

Nubia Benedith scored a career-high 20 points in Jonesboro, with 19 coming in the second half as UL completed the comeback from a 20-point, first-half deficit to force overtime. ASU made 13 three-pointers in the game including the game-winner from Kennedie Montue with 4.6 seconds remaining in OT.

The Ragin' Cajuns seek to snap a two-game losing streak incurred last week on the road when the current stretch of four games involving Arkansas State and Troy began.

Louisiana's Erica Lafayette is the second-leading scorer in SBC play, averaging 17.3 points. The Red Wolves top the charts averaging 10.6 three-pointers made in conference play.

  • UL has won 10 of the last 12 matchups with ASU, including the last six held at the Cajundome since 2019-20.
  • Louisiana is expected to have only nine players available, but has had success shorthanded before. In December, the Cajuns defeated Rice and Georgia Southern with only eight players available.
  • Nubia Benedith delivered a career-high 20 points last week at Arkansas State, scoring 19 in the second half as Louisiana charged back. Benedith became the third Cajun (Lafayette, Robinson) to score 20 points this season.
  • UL held ASU to eight field goals and 31 percent shooting in the second half rally. The efforts lowered the Red Wolves' 32 percent for the game – the fourth time in six SBC games the Cajuns held a foe below 35 percent.
  • The 4-1 start to SBC play was the best for Louisiana since the 2020-21 regular season championship campaign.
  • Louisiana has scored 60-plus each game in SBC play, averaging 70 points and holding a +7.0 scoring margin.
  • Over the first five SBC games, the Cajuns had upped their scoring average to 70.4 points per game (season average was 61.7) while improving their shooting to 46 percent.

  • Erica Lafayette scored at least 17 points each of the first five SBC games, pacing her current 17.3 average in conference play. She ranks No. 2 and trails only JMU's Peyton McDaniel (18.4) for the scoring lead in SBC play.
  • The 29 points off turnovers vs. Southern Miss marked the most gained since Nov. 8 vs. Loyola (30) and the third time gaining 25-plus (27 vs. JMU & GSU) in SBC play. UL is averaging 22.0 ppg off turnovers in conference play.
  • The Ragin' Cajuns rank Top 25 nationally in turnovers forced (21.9), turning the opposition over 20-plus times in 13 of 16 games, including forcing No. 4 LSU into a season-high tying 21 turnovers and Auburn into 25 miscues.
  • UL held its first five foes to 60 or below and has yielded 70-plus only twice (No. 4 LSU, Troy).
  • UL led the SBC in scoring defense – and ranked Top 60 nationally – holding foes below 60 ppg the last two seasons.
