Ragin’ Cajuns Bested by Red Wolves in Rematch

1/23/2025 11:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Louisiana unable to overcome rugged performance in the end

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team uncharacteristically lost the turnover battle and ran into second quarter troubles against Arkansas State again leading to the Red Wolves claiming a 62-49 win in the rematch at the Cajundome on Thursday, January 23.

ASU (11-7, 7-1 SBC) finished with a 24-18 advantage in turnovers forced, picking up 16 steals along the way. The miscues prevented Louisiana (8-9, 4-4 SBC) from establishing any offensive momentum and the team's troubles were compounded by two crucial end-of-quarter momentum swings in the first half.

The Cajuns were in line to hold the edge following a frantic defensive slugfest in the first quarter, however a turnover with four seconds led to a buzzer-beating layup that allowed the Red Wolves to draw even at 8-all.

In the second quarter ASU was the first to find footing on the offensive end, draining five three-pointers to create separation similar to last Wednesday during the second quarter in Jonesboro. The Red Wolves scored three of the triples in the first four minutes of the stanza to open a 21-11 lead.

A 5-0 mini-run, jumpstarted by Erica Lafayette's three-point play off a steal at 2:34, made it a two-possession game at 24-18 with 44 seconds remaining before halftime. ASU countered with five points in the final 18 seconds capped off by Crislyn Rose's buzzer-beating three-pointer.

The Red Wolves stared the second half the same way they ended the opening stanza, a triple from Annaliese Griffin at 9:16 stretching the lead to 32-18 – and the Cajuns were unable to get back within single digits the rest of the way.

Tamiah Robinson finished a three-point play out of the media timeout at the 4:43 mark to slice the deficit to 37-26. Arkansas State ran off a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to firmly take control at 46-26.

The Ragin' Cajuns made their first three field goals of the fourth quarter as part of an 8-0 run over the first four minutes, moving within 47-36 in a stretch resembling the defensive shutout of the third quarter in Jonesboro.

UL had a chance to make ASU even more uncomfortable inside of six minutes. After drawing a charge to force a Red Wolves turnover, Robinson had a three-point attempt rim out at 5:24 and the Red Wolves pushed the ball into the frontcourt where a three-point make netted the visitors a critical six-point swing and a 50-36 lead.

The Cajuns kept attacking, baskets from Kamryn Jones and Nubia Benedith during the three-minute mark closing the deficit to 10 points at 52-42. Once again, though, the Red Wolves dialed up a timely three-point basket with Kennedie Montue's at 2:59 reinforcing the sizeable margin.

ASU snapped a six-game losing streak at the Cajundome. The Red Wolves completed the season sweep of the Ragin' Cajuns for the first time since the 2018-19 season.

Louisiana saw its losing streak extended the three games following the 4-1 start to SBC play. The squad remained winless in the current four-game stretch of games solely against Arkansas State and Troy.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Lafayette collected her 11th straight double-digit scoring performance, scoring a game-high 21 points. It was her fourth 20-point outing of the season and sixth time in eight SBC games producing 17-plus.

Louisiana out-rebounded ASU 43-29 with Jones and Lafayette each gathering seven rebounds to lead a group of four Cajuns with at least five boards. The Cajuns rounded up 16 offensive rebounds, Jones' six charging the effort.

The Red Wolves defense held UL below 30 percent shooting each of the first three quarters to work around the rebounding deficiency, the Cajuns entering the fourth quarter shooting 21 percent (9-of-42).

Arkansas State benefitted from the three-point shot once again, converting 10-of-28 to bring its total in the two matchups with Louisiana to 23 made three-pointers. The Red Wolves enjoyed a 30-3 edge from beyond the arc.
