Louisiana Turned Around During Mid-Game Stretch in Troy

1/18/2025 8:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Cajuns post-first quarter cool down paves way for Trojans’ victory

TROY, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team was in control for the first quarter-plus of Saturday's contest in Troy until the host-Trojans wrestled control away with a strong finish to the second quarter and strong start to the third quarter leading to an 81-73 win for Troy at Trojan Arena.

The Ragin' Cajuns (8-8, 4-3 SBC) shot 10-of-19 in the opening quarter led by Ashlyn Jones' 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting to race out to a 21-13 lead. Jones made a basket at 6:09 to increase the early separation to 8-4 and later accounted for three consecutive UL makes that was closed by a three-point play at 2:53 for a 17-11 lead.

The Trojans (11-7, 6-1 SBC) flipped the script in the second quarter twofold: turning an 8-0 deficit in points off turnovers into an 11-0 advantage and finding increased success near the basket to eradicate the early deficit.

It was a series of four layups in the final six minutes of the first half which pulled Troy out of a 27-22 deficit and into the lead for good, the last conversion by Emma Imevbore putting Troy up 30-28.

A Cajuns turnover kept the Trojans' momentum swing intact as a triple stretched the lead to 33-28. UL answered back in a 5-0 mini-run capped off by Tamiah Robinson's three-point play at 0:47 but a quick responding trey afforded Troy the edge at halftime.

The Trojans stormed out the locker room knocking down 7-of-10 shots in the first five minutes. Meanwhile the Cajuns missed their first six attempts and converted only one during the timeframe, resulting in Troy expanding the lead to 53-37.

Erica Lafayette and Tamiah Robinson combined for 19 points in the fourth quarter helping the Cajuns move back within striking distance. Lafayette landed two 3-point makes by the 8:43 mark and later on Robinson pumped in five points during the five-minute mark to slice into a 68-54 deficit.

Robinson fed Kamryn Jones for a layup with 3:31 remaining lowering the Troy lead to single digits at 70-61. As they did earlier in the quarter in response to Lafayette's triples, the Trojans got a corresponding basket from Briana Peguero with a layup at the 3:12 mark and led by double figures until Robinson's three-point play at 0:10.

The loss resulted in a winless road trip for the Ragin' Cajuns. They'll get a chance to avenge this week's losses to Arkansas State and Troy as the Red Wolves and Trojans visit the Cajundome on January 23 and January 25, respectively.

Troy came away victorious for the fifth straight regular season matchup between the two programs.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Robinson scored a game-high 21 points to go along with a pair of assists and pair of blocks. It was her second 20-plus point showing on the road in SBC play, adding to the career-high tying 22 points she scored January 9 at South Alabama.

Lafayette extended her streak of scoring double figures to 10 consecutive games, with an eight-point fourth quarter lifting her to 12 total points in the contest.

Ashlyn Jones finished with 13 points in the first half alone and was on pace for a career-high day until the Trojans corralled her and kept her scoreless in the second half.

Nubia Benedith followed up her career-high day at Arkansas State (20 points) with a team-leading five assists.

Troy beat Louisiana at its own game, winning the points off of turnovers battle by a 21-13 count. The Trojans had 17 turnovers becoming just the third team this season (Minnesota, Georgia Southern) to prevent the Cajuns defense from forcing 20-plus turnovers.

The Trojans won the overall rebound battle, 46-30, hauling in 15 offensive rebounds while limiting UL to only five. Troy picked up 11 of its 18 second-chance points in the decisive second half.

UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA

The rematches are set to begin on Thursday, January 23 when Louisiana and Arkansas State meet at 6:00 p.m. in the Cajundome. That will be followed Troy's visit on Saturday, January 25 for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
