Louisiana Completes Sweep of Ragin’ Cajuns Classic

Ragin’ Cajuns exit non-conference play on a two-match win streak
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team came away victorious in five sets for the second straight night, claiming a 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-13) win over Florida A&M in the Ragin' Cajuns Classic at E.K. Long Gym.
The result keeps the Ragin' Cajuns (4-7) unbeaten this season with the match on the line. UL moved its mark to five-set matches to 4-0.
After swapping set victories, Louisiana was finally able to shake off the Rattlers (7-5) with its most critical run of the night coming just before the fifth set side switch – erasing a 6-4 deficit with combo block from Cami Hicks and Jaylynn McNeill, a kill from McNeill and a Rattlers miscue.
A Rattlers service error broke the final tie and put the Cajuns up 8-7 at the side switch. The defense forced an attack error when play resumed and each of the next two times FAMU sided out it was UL getting kills from Jazmine Gaston and Cailin Demps to remain ahead.
The Cajuns thwarted the Rattlers last push when a would-be block was overturned by a challenge negating a potential tie and instead advancing the lead to 13-11.
Louisiana's sweep of the Ragin' Cajuns Classic was then secured as a kill from Demps and another Hicks-McNeill combo block, both in response to a FAMU side out, brought the hosts to the magical 15-point mark.
It was a near dead-heat between the two squads with FAMU holding a one-point edge in kills (61-60), assists (59-58) and digs (84-83). Added to the slugfest was a combined 22 blocks, both teams hitting double digits with FAMU holding a slight 12-10 edge, and the scoreboard showing 36 ties and 12 lead changes.
The Ragin' Cajuns got a leg up on the visitors at the very end of the first set. Tied at 23-all, a kill from Demps snapped the 11th tie of the opening frame and an then ace served up by Gaston on the next rally clinched the 1-0 match lead assuring UL would never fall behind during the eventual trading of set wins.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Demps paced Louisiana once again, following up last night's season-high kills total (19) with 17 more kills. She opened the contest with six kills off 13 swings to carry the Cajuns to the Set 1 triumph.
Abby Cunningham delivered a strong night on the outside, starting with five kills off of nine error-free swings and finishing with her season-high of 11 kills.
Gaston was the third Ragin' Cajun in double digits with her 10 kills. It marked the freshman's eighth double-digit output in the 11-match non-conference portion of the season.
Hicks continued her season-long dominance on the frontline, throwing up nine blocks (2 BS, 7 BA) to increase her season total to 59 blocks (10 BS, 49 BA). It marked the seventh time this season she's posted at least five blocks.
Libero Mio Yamamoto hit the 20-dig mark for the sixth time this season and 16th time overall as a Ragin' Cajun, hauling in a match-leading 28 digs which was one shy of her season-high figure set the night before.
Megan Hawkins paced Louisiana's 6-2 attack with 27 assists and added 11 digs for her team-leading fifth double-double.

Louisiana concludes its September-ending homestand and hosts Texas State at E.K. Long Gym during the Opening Weekend of Sun Belt Conference play from Friday-Saturday, September 27-28.
The Ragin' Cajuns and Bobcats begin the two-match series on Friday (Sept. 27) at 6:00 p.m. before closing the two-match series with a 1:00 p.m. match on Saturday (Sept. 28).
Louisiana opens SBC play at home for the second straight season. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
