SAN MARCOS, Texas – Lee Amedee's two-run single in the eighth inning highlighted a five-run outburst and Louisiana extended its win streak to 11 games with a gritty 7-6 win over Texas State to complete a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep on Saturday at Bobcat Ballpark.
Matthew Holzhammer (3-0) pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief as Louisiana (20-8, 8-1 SBC) earned its fourth come-from-behind victory of the season while equaling its best nine-game league start for the third time overall and first since 2014.
"We just kept grinding at-bats, and then (Caleb) Stelly got us going there late and we were able to put up five in the eighth," head coach Matt Deggs said. "I can't enough about the job Matt Holzhammer did holding them (Texas State) right there ... and it could have got away.
"We knew it would have to be a gritty performance by us today because they're tough to beat here. I'm just real proud of our guys."
Stelly, whose RBI single in the fifth inning tied the game at 2-2, led off the eighth with a walk off Texas State reliever Matthew Tippie (2-1) before John Taylor singled up the middle and Luke Yuhasz walked to load the bases.
Kyle DeBarge then chased Tippie after lacing a single to right field to drive in Stelly and cut Texas State's lead to 4-3.
Amedee then greeted reliever Rhett McCaffety with a two-run single through the left side which beat the Texas State defensive shift and plated Taylor and Yuhasz for a 5-4 lead. DeBarge would score after Jose Torres was hit by a pitch and Josh Alexander lifted a sacrifice fly to drive in Amedee for a 7-4 lead.
Texas State (15-13, 4-5 SBC), which was swept at home in a conference series since 2021, scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead off Louisiana starter Blake Marshall.
Alec Patino singled through the right side to score Kameron Weil in the first inning before the Bobcats produced an unearned run in the second when Weil's infield single drove in August Ramirez.
Texas State starter Drayton Brown retired 10 straight batters before Conor Higgs hit the first pitch of the fifth inning for his third home run of the season. Alexander reached on a one-out double to chase Brown and Stelly greeted reliever Otto Wofford with RBI single to right on a 3-and-2 count.
The Bobcats retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Ramirez greeted Holzhammer with a two-out single through the right side to plate Patino and Aaron Lugo for a 4-2 lead.
LP Langevin, the sixth pitcher used by Louisiana, pitched the final inning to earn his second save of the weekend and third of the season. The right-hander, who threw 3.1 innings in Thursday's 4-1 win, allowed a pair of one-out RBI singles before getting Chase Mora to foul out to first and pinch-hitter Alex Gonzales to pop up to second.
Taylor, DeBarge and Amedee each finished with two hits to lead Louisiana, which earned its first-ever sweep in San Marcos and won despite being outhit, 12-9. Taylor's eighth-inning single extended his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games and his string of reaching base to 28 games.
Marshall pitched 1.2 innings in his second career start for the Ragin' Cajuns before Brendan Moody pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
"Very proud of them, I told them I'm running out of adjectives if that's what you call it to describe them," Deggs said. "It's not just one guy either, it's a lot of different kids just pitching in and all pulling on the rope in the same direction and understanding what we're all about, and that's just find a way to win."
Tippie allowed four runs with three walks in 2.1 innings to take the loss for the Bobcats. Brown tossed 4.1 innings and scattered four hits with three strikeouts for Texas State with Ramirez going 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Bobcat offense.
Louisiana will return home for a nine-game homestand beginning on Tuesday when it plays host to Nicholls in a 6 p.m. contest at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
