Cajuns Rally In Fifth To Earn Two-Match Sweep In Monroe

11/8/2024 10:19:00 PM | Volleyball

Louisiana will wrap up regular season beginning Thursday against Georgia Southern

MONROE – Cailin Demps recorded three of her team-high 16 kills in a decisive fifth set and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team rallied from a 7-1 deficit late to earn a 3-2 (25-19, 15-25, 25-20, 23-25, 16-14) victory over ULM and complete a sweep of a two-match SBC series on Friday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Demps started the rally for Louisiana (8-15, 4-8 SBC) after ULM (4-22, 0-14 SBC) opened the fifth set with three straight points before using a 4-1 run to build a 7-1 cushion.

Louisiana picked up its 14th consecutive win over ULM dating back to 2019. The Ragin' Cajuns will wrap up the season beginning on Thursday when it plays host to Georgia Southern in a two-match SBC series at Earl K. Long Gym.

The Ragin' Cajuns, who improved to 7-1 in five-set matches this season, chipped away at the lead and forced a 10-all tie on Jazmin Gaston's kill. A kill by ULM's Madeline Villarreal and a service ace by Morgan Howard gave the Warhawks a 12-10 lead and after a timeout, Louisiana would battle back with a pair of kills by Chelsea Gilmore and ULM attack error.

Gilmore and Demps would combine on a block to give Louisiana its first lead of the set – 14-13 – before ULM knotted the score on a kill by Taly Cloyd. Demps would break the tie with a kill and Louisiana would close out the match on Mio Yamamoto's service ace.

Louisiana out-hit ULM, .256-.213, at the net and held a 76-68 advantage in digs. The Ragin' Cajuns posted 10.0 blocks in the match and out-hit the Warhawks, .200-.097, in the fifth set.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Demps was one of four players to record double-digit kills for Louisiana with Gaston (11), Cami Hicks (10) and Abby Cunningham (10) following. Three players – Megan Hawkins (24), Danielle Taix (22) and Yamamoto (10) – notched 10-plus assists for the Ragin' Cajuns with Hicks (5) and Cunningham (4) leading the way in blocks.

Yamamoto led all players with 21 digs with Taix adding 15. Hawkins (11), Gaston (10) and Kennedy Gustafson (10) all recorded in double digits in digs for Louisiana.
