Arkansas State completes two-match sweep at E.K. Long Gym
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team fell short on the offensive side both in production and efficiency, tipping the scales in Arkansas State's favor of a 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-15) win for the visiting Red Wolves at E.K. Long Gym on Saturday, November 2.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns (6-15, 2-8 SBC) were out-killed 40-30 and the Red Wolves (20-4, 10-2 SBC) hit .246 (40-12-114) compared to UL's .093 (30-20-107). Adding to ASU's edge on offense was multiple scoring options as six different players scored at least three kills.
Â
Louisiana won the defensive battle in digs (52-45) and blocks (5.0-4.0). Arkansas State countered by winning the service line, finishing with seven aces.
Â
Early service errors kept the Cajuns from taking the lead at the start of Set 1 and Sarah Martinez served up an ace to help ASU gain breathing room at 6-4. The Red Wolves sided out each time after the Cajuns' next two scores, the latter starting a 4-0 run that stretched the lead to 11-6.
Â
Arkansas State sided out at 86 percent in the first set and gradually built an insurmountable lead.
Â
Despite being set back by attack errors most of Set 2 – offsetting a 15-9 advantage in kills – the Ragin' Cajuns battled back eventually forging a 23-all tie. Cailin Demps and Abby Cunningham went back-to-back for kills and Cunningham followed up with a block placing all the momentum on UL's side.
Â
ASU narrowly avoided the contest being even after two sets. After a timeout it was a setter dump kill from Erin Madigan that regained the lead and a kill from Grace Wiley on the next rally that landed set point.
Â
Louisiana climbed out of a 3-0 deficit in Set 3 pulling ahead 6-5 on a solo block from Chelsea Gilmore. The Red Wolves quickly regained the advantage by reeling off a 9-0 run and never looked back.
Â
Arkansas State posted its second straight win in the all-time series for the first time since 2017-18. The loss eliminated the Ragin' Cajuns from the race for a spot in the SBC Championship Tournament.
Â
