Newcomers Jeremiah Evans and Mostapha El-Moutaouakkil led the team with 17 points
LAFAYETTE – In their first action since March, the Louisiana men's basketball team cruised to a 91-67 win over Louisiana Christian in an exhibition contest on Wednesday in the Cajundome. Louisiana had four players in double figures and all 11 players scored on the night.
Freshman Jeremiah Evans made a huge first impression, scoring 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting with 11 rebounds and three blocks. Fellow newcomer Mostapha El-Moutaouakkil matched him with 17 points to lead the offense. London Fields had an efficient 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting along with four rebounds while Christian Wright had a quiet 10 points, doing his damage at the free throw line where he was 6-for-7.
Wright got Louisiana on the board with the first bucket of the game on a layup. The sides traded baskets before Louisiana's offense got going. Four straight Michael Thomas points followed by four from Evans pushed the lead to doubles figures at 21-11.
The Wildcats wouldn't go quietly and kept the game within single digits at 29-21 with 6:47 to go in the opening half. From there the Cajuns put their foot on the gas. Zeke Cook's putback sparked a 9-0 Louisiana run to balloon the lead to 17. They'd close the opening frame with the last seven points, sending the game into the half ahead 47-24. Louisiana closed the final six-plus minutes of the first half on an 18-3 run.
Louisiana led by as many as 31 in the second half before the Wildcat offense got a little rhythm, cutting the lead down to 17 with just over five minutes to play. In the final three minutes, the Cajuns closed on a 13-6 run to put the game away.
The season starts Monday night when the Cajuns welcome Kent State to the Cajundome for the first half of the MAC-SBC Challenge.
