Cajuns Bested by Jaguars in Series Finale

Louisiana starts strong each set, South Alabama able to overcome
MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team held early leads all three sets but was sidetracked by key South Alabama rallies each time and the host-Jaguars claimed a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-18) win in the series finale of a Sun Belt Conference matchup on Friday, October 25 at Jaguar Gym in Mobile, Alabama.
The Ragin' Cajuns (6-13, 2-6 SBC) were met by a sharpshooting effort again from the Jags (12-8, 8-2 SBC) who hit .288 (44-12-114). USA turned up the pressure at the net the second go-around, averaging four per set (12 total).
Three early kills from Cailin Demps had UL in front 5-3 at the onset. South Alabama gradually evened the score at 7-all and took control with a 7-0 run sparked by five kills along the way. In a similar start as Thursday, the Jags committed only one attack error hitting .371 in the frame to stay separated from the Cajuns.
Cami Hicks was in on a pair of blocks and later landed a kill for a 7-6 lead in Set 2. Play went back-and-forth and the teams were knotted at 10-all before four straight kills pulled USA ahead 14-10.
The Jaguars' block was a factor down the stretch with nine stuffs over the final two frames, the two most crucial occurring on the two rallies after Louisiana had sliced the lead to 16-15 in the second stanza. Following those stops was back-to-back kills from Sarah Gooch and South was on its way to a 2-0 match lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns, who bounced back to take a 4-2 lead earlier on in Set 3, appeared set to overcome a Jaguars move when the serve of Megan Hawkins evened the score at 14-all. However, the Jags countered with three straight kills and rode the momentum to match point.
Louisiana's block was more active than the series opener with seven recorded. USA took advantage of a 44-31 edge in kills and the Cajuns committing twice as many attack errors.
South Alabama extended its series win streak to seven matches and swept the SBC weekend series with Louisiana for the third straight season. The Jags trimmed the Cajuns' all-time lead in SBC play to 25-21.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
A combined 16 kills from Demps (9) and Lauryn Hill (7) accounted for a majority of the Cajuns' offensive production.
Hicks added five kills to her team-leading five blocks. The graduate middle blocker pushed her season blocks total to 106, leaving her one shy of match-high her personal single-season total (107 in 2022).
Ella Chaney (3 blocks), Chelsea Gilmore (2 blocks) and Hill (2 blocks) were the others to have a hand in multiple rejections.
Libero Mio Yamamoto scooped 11 digs and she was supported by eight apiece from Hawkins and Hill.
Hawkins passed out 20 of Louisiana's 31 assists. She hit 20 assists for the third straight match and sixth time in SBC play, and was two digs shy of her 10th double-double.
UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
The Ragin' Cajuns return home to E.K. Long Gym to continue division play in the Sun Belt Conference hosting Arkansas State from Friday-Saturday, November 1-2.
Louisiana and Arkansas State are scheduled to open the two-match series at 6:00 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 1), then conclude play on Saturday (Nov. 2) in a 1:00 p.m. contest. The matches are being broadcast on ESPN+.
The UL Volleyball program will be conducting a canned food drive to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank throughout the series with the Red Wolves.
