Louisiana was kept off track until the third set
TROY, Ala. – Troy started quick in the first two sets and withstood defensive pressure from the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team in the third set to finish off a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-23) win on Friday, October 18 at Trojan Arena in Troy, Alabama.
Louisiana (5-11, 1-4 SBC) was placed in recovery mode early as the Trojans (8-9, 3-4 SBC) raced out to identical 10-3 starts in the first two sets in building a 2-0 match lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns picked up seven of their match-best 11 blocks in the third set alone and out-dug the Trojans 23-17 in an all-out effort to extend the match. There were 12 ties and six lead changes before Troy fended off UL's pushback.
The Trojans established control early with their offense by hitting .260 and scoring 30 kills through two sets before finishing with a 49-22 kills advantage for the match. With Troy siding out at a 77 percent rate the Ragin' Cajuns offense was unable to pick up momentum early on, totaling only 12 kills by intermission.
Troy extended its series win streak to three matches dating back to last season's sweep at E.K. Long Gym and moved its series lead in the SBC era to 16-9.
The Ragin' Cajuns found their footing in Set 3 starting with Cailin Demps and Abby Cunningham both scoring a pair of kills to jump ahead 5-4. The blocking took over next, a combo stuff from Cunningham and Cami Hicks on the next rally preserving the lead and later Demps joining Chelsea Gilmore for back-to-back stuffs that opened a 12-9 lead.
Louisiana played with the lead in its effort to extend the contest into the 20s even taking a 21-19 lead after a Lauryn Hill kill and a combo block from Cunningham and Gilmore.
Troy won the next three rallies to take a 22-21 lead and start a seesaw finish. UL went back in front after back-to-back Trojans miscues, however Amiah Butler responded with consecutive kills to give Troy a 24-23 lead and then an awry serve receive took Megan Hawkins into the net as the Cajuns comeback effort was stopped short.
