1/17/2024 8:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Contest with ULM marks first of four straight at Cajundome to close out January
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team settles into a January-ending, four-game homestand on Thursday, January 18 taking on ULM in a 6:00 p.m. contest at the Cajundome.
Louisiana (6-8, 2-3 SBC) returns to the Cajundome following an even split of a four-game road trip that kicked off the new year. It's UL's first home outing since the Sun Belt opener on December 30 vs. App State.
Admission to the game – and all UL Women's Basketball games throughout the entire season – is free and open to the public.
The matchup with the Warhawks (11-5, 3-2 SBC) will be streamed live on ESPN+ and can be heard in the Acadiana region on The GOAT 103.3 FM and 1420 AM and worldwide on the Varsity Network.
The Cajuns seek to build upon last Saturday's come-from-behind win at Arkansas State that saw the squad shoot their Sun Belt-play best of 48 percent (23-of-48) – the fourth time in five league games shooting 40-plus percent.
UL is coming back home full strength with leading scorer and leading rebounder Tamera Johnson returning to play during the recent road trip. Johnson missed the last two home games in December with a nose injury incurred vs. North Texas (Dec. 17).
The Cajuns are also bringing back home an additional scoring source in sophomore Jaylyn James who averaged 13.3 points per game during the road trip and produced a career-high 25 points in a start at ASU.
Louisiana brings an 18-game win streak over ULM into Thursday's outing, however it'll be a new-look Warhawks squad that will pose a challenge to the Cajuns' lengthy series win streak.
Johnson, who has scored double digits in nine of her 12 appearances, averages a team-leading 12.8 points per game. The Lafayette native averages near five field goal makes on 46 percent shooting (57-of-125).
Brandi Williams follows closely with 11.4 points per game and sports a team-best 28 triples and the duo of Tamiah Robinson (28) and Destiny Rice (27) has 55 assists between them. Johnson tops the charts with 78 rebounds (23 offense, 55 defense) and is supported by a group of six others with 20-plus boards.
ULM is under the guidance of first-year head coach Missy Bilderback. In an overhaul of the program's roster, Bilderback brought in 11 transfers including three from Power 5 programs (Auburn, Clemson) and a trio from within the Sun Belt Conference (Southern Miss, Troy).
The Warhawks are led by Nunu Bradford (Mobile, Ala./Clemson) who ranks fourth in scoring (20.6), fourth in rebounding (7.8) and third in assists per game (4.9) in the Sun Belt. Jakayla Johnson (Clinton, Miss./Auburn) averages 14.1 points and is coming off her third 20-point game in a ULM uniform (20 vs. Texas State on Jan. 13).
