Ragin’ Cajuns Start Indoor Season Strong at Purple Tiger Invite

Louisiana won three events on the day
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana - The Louisiana track and field had a strong start to the 2024 indoor season at the Purple Tiger Invite. The Cajuns won three events and set seven personal records in their first meet of the year.
Teodor Borgius claimed the first victory of the day for Louisiana in the men's pole vault, clearing 16 feet 11.5 inches, just beating out teammate Timothy Gale by 6 inches for the win. Abbey Marie Ratcliff was victorious in the women's 3k. The Cajuns took five of the top six spots, led by Ratcliff's time of 10:37.00.
In the final women's event of the day, the 4x400-meter relay cruised to a victory. The quartet of Kenzie Touchet, Moseiha Bridgen, Ta'La Spates, and Quincy Simon finished in 3:54.90, winning by 3.5 seconds.
The Cajuns had a big day in field events taking home six top three finishes. Following the men's domination in the pole vault, the women did so too. Cammi Martinez took second with her jump of 12 feet on the first attempt. Teammates Jordan Brown and Lauren Roberts also cleared that mark but on the second attempt to finish in third place.
A pair of freshmen dazzled in the jump events. Alaysha Veal cleared 5 feet 3.25 inches for a second-place finish in the women's high jump. In the men's long jump, Montrell Morris jumped 23 feet 1.75 inches to take home second.
Elsewhere, Taylor Davis placed third in the women's triple jump with a leap of 40 feet 0.75 inches. Teammate Reem Tammam's jump of 39 feet 6 inches in the same event was good enough for fifth. To wrap up field events, Tyren Hannah's weight throw went 61 feet 0.25 inches to place third.
Louisiana had five of the top six spots in the women's 3k. Following Ratcliff, who posted a PR, was Haley Salsbury in third (10:39.15), Isabelle Russell in fourth (10:41.16), Ella Segura in fifth (10:42.07), and Brooke Spalitta in sixth (10:43.56). They had a pair of PRs in the 60-meter hurdles with Kennedy London's time of 8.43 and Kayla Meyers' 8.69.
On the men's side, they had a pair of top-five finishes in the mile. Peyton Chiasson was second with a time of 4:15.41, ahead of Joseph Patterson's 4:19.74 in fifth. Javed Jones claimed third in the men's 600 with a time of 1:21.35. In the 3k, Nathan Fontan finished third in 8:54.21 while Chiasson wasn't far behind in sixth (8:55.97).
The men closed the day with a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter with Caemon Scott, Mekhi Boutte, Jarell Joseph, and Javed Jones running it in 3:19.67.
The team has a quick turnaround before their next event. They'll head to Birmingham, Alabama for the Samford Invitational beginning Thursday, January 18.
