Pair of extra point battles favor Texas Tech in Red Raider Classic finale
LUBBOCK, Texas – In a tightly contested match where each set was decided by three points or less it was Texas Tech picking up a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 30-28) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team in the finale of the Red Raider Classic on Saturday, September 2 at United Supermarkets Arena.
Evident of how the match result could have gone either way, the final two set victories for the Red Raiders (6-1) came in extra points. Overall in the match there were 31 ties and 14 lead changes.
Louisiana (4-3) had the advantage on offense, holding a 46-44 edge in kills, but was ultimately undone by more than twice as many attack errors (26) as the Red Raiders (12) had.
UL took a 19-18 lead late in the opening set after Mya Wilson slammed a kill off the block and Cami Hicks served up an ace, but the Red Raiders recovered with a 5-1 spurt to seize control.
With a kill by Lauryn Hill, block from Hicks and kill from Celeste Darling the Cajuns stormed back to even Set 2 at 24-all. The chance to even the match was spoiled as TTU sided out with Caitlin Dugan's kill and won the subsequent point.
Louisiana was primed to extend the match, holding a 24-19 lead in Set 3 after an ace from Chelsea George followed by a kill from Hill. The Red Raiders stormed back five straight winners and fought off set point four times before back-to-back blocks sealed the match victory.
Hill was UL's top point producer, landing 13 kills while freshman Abby Cunningham followed with eight kills off her 17 swings. TTU was able to limit Shyia Richardson to her first single-digit output of the season at five kills.
Digs were even at 48-all as Mio Yamamoto's 20 digs and George's 12 digs carried Louisiana. The Red Raiders had the decisive defensive edge, out-blocking the Ragin' Cajuns 12-2 with Kate Hansen (6) and Reese Rhodes (5) having a hand in all but three of the blocks.
Setter Siena DeCambra, who averaged 11.6 assists per set for the weekend, and Hicks represented Louisiana on the Red Raider Classic all-tournament team.
