Tigers Change Flow in Fourth Set, Take Match from Cajuns

Louisiana continues eastward trek on I-10 heading to Jacksonville for UNF Invitational

BATON ROUGE – LSU used a quick momentum shift early in the fourth set to break a match trend of trading set victories, resulting in the host-Tigers claiming a 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-12, 25-12) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team in a midday matchup on Wednesday, September 6 at the PMAC.

Entering the fourth set, the team with the quick start had carried the momentum to a win. The Ragin' Cajuns (4-4) started Set 4 with a Siena DeCambra ace and were off to a fast 4-1 start following a combo block by Mya Wilson and Emery Judkins.

Louisiana's bid to continue the match trend and force a fifth set would wind up being spoiled as LSU (3-3) won nine straight points starting with an Angie Lee kill to forge ahead 10-4. The Tigers led by as many as five points the rest of the way in completing the match victory.

The Tigers used their offense to their advantage, landing at least 13 kills every set in building a 55-33 advantage over the Ragin' Cajuns. LSU wound up out-hitting UL .264-.066.

Shyia Richardson paced the Cajuns' efforts with nine kills and Celeste Darling followed with an extremely efficient seven kills off of 11 swings at a .545 clip.

Wilson and Judkins were the top performers on the frontline with three blocks each. Libero Mio Yamamoto hit double figures in digs a fourth straight match, rounding up a team-leading 16 digs.

LSU was led by the trio of Jade Demps (15), Jurnee Robinson (11) and Sanna Dotson (10) who each accounted for double digits in kills.

The opening set the Tigers scored the first two points and the Cajuns managed to force a tie four times, including 14-all after Hicks and Richardson powered through blocks, but never jumped ahead. LSU broke through with four straight winners that opened a 20-15 edge.

UL scored the first two points of Set 2, weathered a lead change and pair of ties, then pulled away when Darling capped off a 5-0 run with back-to-back kills for an 11-6 lead. It was Darling with kills for key sideouts after the Tigers drew within two, the latter at 13-11, and from there the Cajuns led by at least three until set point.

LSU turned to its defense to prevent a potential match-changing momentum swing in Set 3, forcing the Cajuns into four attack errors during a set-opening 5-1 lead and never looked back in regaining the match lead.

Wednesday's contest marked the first meeting between the two in-state schools since the 2011 season. It also began the final leg of Louisiana's season-opening road stretch, the first of four remaining matches to play before returning home to E.K. Long Gym from September 14-16 for the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic.
