Ortego Moves Into Top-5; Louisiana In Second At SBC Championships

MADISON, Miss. Eli Ortego sank three birdies on the back nine and finished at 2-under-par 70 to move into a tie for third place overall while the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team remained in second place after two rounds of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championships on Tuesday at Annandale Golf Club.
 
The final round of stroke play in the 54-hole event is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Louisiana, which will be paired with second-day leader and No. 26-ranked Georgia Southern and first-day leader Troy in the final round, recorded a team score of 2-over-290 to finish five strokes behind Georgia Southern in the 14-team field.
 
The top-four teams from the 54-hole stroke play event will advance to match play on Thursday, (April 27). The semifinal matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the No. 1 and No. 4 seed on No. 1 and the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds on No. 10. The championship match will follow the conclusion of the semifinal matches on Thursday.
 
Ortego, who recorded a pair of birdies on the front nine and finished at even-par 36 at the turn, recorded consecutive birdies at No. 11 (par-5) and 12 (par-3) before ending his round with a birdie at the par-5, No. 18. The 2022 SBC Freshman of the Year moved to within three strokes behind Troy's Brantley Scott for the individual lead after finishing at 3-under-141 after 36 holes.
 
Freshman Malan Potgieter opened at 3-under-33 on the front nine for Louisiana before posting bogeys on his first three holes on the back to slip out of first place. Potgieter, who enters Wednesday's final round in a tie for sixth place at 2-under-142, would add a double bogey at No. 17 before rallying to post a birdie at No. 18 and finish with a 1-over-73 for the round.
 
Charlie Flynn overcame a pair of bogeys on the front nine for the Ragin' Cajuns to post a 1-under-35 on the back to finish at 1-over-73 and move up five spots on the leaderboard to a tie for 22nd at 3-over-147. Matt Weber recorded his second consecutive round of 2-over-74 for Louisiana while Jake Marler recorded a 5-over-77.
 
Georgia Southern recorded a team score of 8-under-280 to finish at 573 after 36 holes and five strokes ahead of Louisiana. Troy (580), Southern Miss (581), Texas State (581) and South Alabama (581) rounded out the top five in the standings with Arkansas State (583) surging up five spots to seventh after posting a team-low score of 9-under-279.
