Louisiana Advances To SBC Match Play; Ortego Finishes Tied For Fourth

MADISON, Miss. – Eli Ortego posted his third consecutive round of below par, carding a 1-under-71, and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team earned its highest finish since 2012 after finishing in a third-place tie and advancing to Match Play at the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championships on Wednesday at Annandale Golf Club.
Louisiana, which finished the 54-hole tied with Troy at 6-over-870, earned the No. 3 seed in Match Play and will face No. 2-seeded South Alabama on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. The winner will advance to the Sun Belt Championship match and face the winner of the other semifinal contest between top-seeded Georgia Southern and Troy.
Both semifinal matches and the SBC Championship will be streamed on ESPN+ (beginning at 9 a.m.) with live results available at GolfStat.com.
Ortego, one of two players in the 70-player field to finish below par in each of the three rounds, collected three birdies on the front nine and two more on the back to finish four strokes behind individual medalist Hugo Thyr of South Alabama at 4-under-212.
Freshman Malan Potgieter carded his second straight round of 1-over-73 to finish tied for seventh overall at 1-under-215. Matt Weber recorded a 1-over 73 in the final round to finish at 5-over-221 for the 54-hole tournament with Charlie Flynn and Jake Marler each finishing at 227.
