Ortego In First Place Tie After 36 Holes at Louisiana Classics

Louisiana paired with LSU, Texas State in Tuesday's final round
LAFAYETTE – Eli Ortego posted one of three recorded rounds in the 60's through 36 holes and finished in a tie for first place to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team after the opening day of the 38th annual Louisiana Classics on Monday at Oakbourne Country Club.

Louisiana wrapped up the opening day in fifth place in the 14-team field with a team score of 593 – 14 shots behind first-day leader and No. 15-ranked Texas A&M. The Aggies, the defending tournament champion, finished at 579 after 36 holes with Sam Houston (584), No. 32-ranked Little Rock (587) and No. 47 LSU (591) finishing ahead of the Ragin' Cajuns.

The final round of the 54-hole event will begin on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+ with coverage beginning at 9 a.m. Louisiana, which will be paired with LSU and Texas State in the final round, will tee off from the No. 10 hole beginning at 8:15 a.m.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Ortego produced one of six recorded rounds below par during the opening 36 holes as he posted a 2-under-par 71 in the afternoon session.

The Lafayette native posted three straight birdies on the front nine, beginning on the par-3, 200-yard No. 4, and made the turn at 3-under 33. Ortego fought off a pair of bogeys on the back nine with a birdie on the par-4, 404-yard No. 14 and finished tied with Little Rock's Anton Albers and Kyle Bennett of New Orleans at 1-over 143.

Louisiana placed a second player in the top-10 as freshman Malan Potgieter was three strokes back at 4-over-146. Jake Marler (75-77-152), Charlie Flynn (78-76-154), and Matt Weber (81-75-156) rounded out Louisiana's lineup with a trio of Ragin Cajuns – Burke Alford (78-80-158), Dylan Keating (84-78-162) and Maximilian Feistmantl (86-84-170) competing individually.
