Louisiana Opens Up Sun Belt Tournament Against App State

The No. 7-seeded Ragin’ Cajuns square off against No. 10 Mountaineers at 7:30 p.m.
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team opens the 2023 Sun Belt Tournament against App State on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.

In the first meeting of the season between the two teams, Louisiana topped the Mountaineers, 65-51, in Boone, N.C., on Jan. 28. Tamera Johnson led the way as she scored a game-high 22 points and hauled in eight rebounds to go with three steals while Nubia Benedith and Sherry Porter added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Earlier this week, sophomore guard Lanay Wheaton garnered All-Sun Belt Conference honors as voted on by the league's head coaches. Louisiana's leading scorer both overall (12.3) and in Sun Belt Conference play (14.2), Wheaton picked up the first all-conference award of her collegiate career.

In SBC play, Wheaton ranked top 15 in points per game as she produced 10 of her 14 double-figure scoring efforts in conference play. She reached double figures in nine of her last 10 appearances.

Wheaton scored 20-plus four times in conference play including closing the regular season with back-to-back, 20-plus point efforts against top-four seeds Texas State and Southern Miss.

Tamara Johnson has enjoyed a career season this year as she is averaging a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game and is the team's second-leading scorer at 11.6 points per game. Last season, the Lafayette, Louisiana, native averaged 9.8 points and 5.4 rebounds.

The Ragin' Cajuns hold a 7-4 advantage over App State in series annals. Wednesday's matchup is the first matchup between the two teams not taking place in Boone, N.C. since Jan. 31, 2019.Â

Under the leadership of head coach Garry Brodhead, the Ragin' Cajuns are 12-9 all-time at the Sun Belt Tournament.

With a win, the Cajuns would square off with Texas State on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
