Louisiana faces NAIA-ranked Loyola (La.) in last fine-tuning session before 2023-24 season resumes

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team plays the second and final exhibition game of its two-week break from regular season play on Monday, November 27, welcoming NAIA-ranked No. 15 Loyola (La.) to the Cajundome.
 
The exhibition contest with the Wolf Pack is scheduled to tip off at 5:00 p.m., marking the first half of a doubleheader with the two school's men's basketball programs.
 
Admission to the Louisiana-Loyola women's hoops matchup – and for all UL Women's Basketball games throughout the entire season – is free and open to the public.

Following Monday night's outing, the Ragin' Cajuns are scheduled to resume the 2023-24 season on Saturday, December 2 in New Orleans with a 2:00 p.m. game against the Privateers at Lakefront Arena.
 
Louisiana (2-2) opened the exhibition break on Tuesday, Nov. 21 with a 64-40 win over Xavier (La.) prior to entering the Thanksgiving holiday. The Cajuns opened with an 8-0 run and led for all 40 minutes on the strength of forcing the Gold Nuggets into 21 turnovers and limiting them to 10 field goal makes on 26 percent shooting.
 
UL's last regular season action came on Saturday, November 18 at the Cajundome, an exhilarating 69-63 overtime win over Nicholls that saw the Cajuns rally from 13 points down with six minutes remaining in regulation and featured five triples from Brandi Williams and a 17-point, 17-rebound double-double from Tamera Johnson.
 
Johnson, who has scored double figures all four regular season games and is averaging 15.3 points per game, and Williams, already in double figures with 10 triples and is averaging 12.8 points per game, have been have been the early season standouts on the offensive side for the Ragin' Cajuns.
 
Loyola (5-1) is coming off its third 90-point performance at home on the young season, defeating Texas Wesleyan 90-75 on Tuesday (Nov. 21). Sandra Cannady, who picked up her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, is the Wolf Pack's leading scorer (18.3 ppg) and rebounder (10.0 rpg). Former Ragin' Cajun and Lafayette native Lizzy Ratcliff is the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 14.3 points per game on 46 percent shooting overall (20-of-44) including 40 percent from three-point range (8-of-20).
 
Louisiana is closing a four-game homestand with the Loyola matchup. The Cajuns travel for the next two outings, starting Saturday (Dec. 2) in New Orleans and ending the following Sunday (Dec. 10) in Baton Rouge at LSU.

• Ashlyn Jones scored a game-high tying 11 points in the Xavier (La.) exhibition game, finishing as the top points producer among the 12 out of 15 Ragin' Cajuns who stepped on the court that scored in the contest.
• The Cajuns out-rebounded XULA 44-36, with 19 boards on the offensive end, forced the Gold Nuggets into 21 turnovers and limited the visitors to 10 field goal makes on 26 percent shooting.
• Louisiana made at least 12 field goals each half vs. Xavier (La.) in totaling 25 made baskets from inside the arc and valued the ball throughout the contest as evidenced by only six turnovers committed.
• Tamera Johnson is the reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, receiving the award on Tuesday, November 21 following her 17-point, 17-rebound double-double showcase vs. Nicholls.
• Tamera Johnson has scored at least 15 points all three regular season games at the Cajundome this season, generating a season-high 17 vs. Nicholls (Nov. 18).
• Tamera Johnson grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds in the overtime win over Nicholls. She hauled in seven rebounds alone in the fourth quarter as the Cajuns held the Colonels to only one field goal the final 7:46 of the period.
• Brandi Williams opened the current homestand with back-to-back, 17-point efforts (Kent State, Nicholls).
• Brandi Williams tied her career-high with five (5) three-point makes vs. Nicholls. The 10 triples she's recorded ranked second in the Sun Belt, and Top 75 nationally, prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.
• Utah State transfer Tamiah Robinson (11) and Destiny Rice (7) have combined for half of the Cajuns assists total (18 of 36).
• Early on the Cajuns are meeting their goal of improved free throw shooting, connecting on 70 percent (63-of-90). UL is coming off back-to-back 70-plus percent efforts against Kent State (21-of-26) and Nicholls (18-of-25) in which the squad shot a combined 39-of-51 (77 percent).
• With December approaching, the Cajuns are hopeful to soon add the full-time services of key players Lanay Wheaton, Mariah Stewart and Aasia Sam who combined have missed all but one regular season game (Stewart played the season opener).
