Urchoeguia Earns a Pair of Wins on Opening Day of ITA Regional

With a win tomorrow she’ll advance to the main event
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – Carla Urchoeguia opened the ITA South Regional with a bang on Thursday, October 5, winning both of her singles matches in Baton Rouge. She advanced to the final round of qualifiers where with a win she'll advance to the top 64 of the main event.
Urchoeguia opened the day by dispatching Irene Artigas Taberner of Jacksonville State, 6-4, 6-4. In the next round, she held off Northwestern State's Honoka Umeda, 6-2, 7-6 (8) to continue on.
Elsewhere in the bracket, teammate Jenaila Prulla went to three sets against Sofia Garcia of Northwestern State but fell, 3-6, 6-0, 10-8. Fellow Cajun Christine Tchanichev fell to Delien Kleinhans of South Alabama, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round of the qualifiers.
Tomorrow Urchoeguia aims to make the event's main draw against Marta Serra from North Alabama.
