Ragin’ Cajuns toughed it out early before putting away Arkansas State
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team battled through the first two sets before coasting to the finish line in a 3-0 (27-25, 26-24, 25-17) win over Arkansas State on Thursday, September 29 at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Ragin' Cajuns straight sets sweep of the two-match Sun Belt Conference series opener with the Red Wolves didn't come without its challenges.
Louisiana (8-4, 2-1 Sun Belt) trailed by as many as six points early in the opening set and as late as 17-11 before storming back. The Ragin' Cajuns used a Mya Wilson and Celeste Darling combo block followed by a Lauryn Hill kill to pull ahead 24-23 and set up an extra points battle.
Cami Hicks helped Louisiana complete the comeback and stun the Red Wolves (5-10, 0-3 Sun Belt) by snapping a 25-all tie with a kill then getting a hand in a block that secured set point.
The Ragin' Cajuns had to endure a marathon in the second set with 17 ties and five lead changes occurring and the largest lead by either team not occurring until Emery Judkins' kill opened a 23-20 lead.
After ASU rallied to forge a 23-all tie it was Judkins keeping Louisiana one step ahead with a pair of kills, the latter recapturing the lead at 25-24 in extra points. The next rally Kelsey Bennett recorded a kill on second contact off a Reka Kotorman dig and the Ragin' Cajuns opened a 2-0 match lead.
A Darling kill and Wilson ace created a 5-2 lead in Set 3 and the separation began. Louisiana later put the frame out of reach during a three-point sequence where Bennett and Wilson combined for a block, Coco Gillett got a kill off an overpass and followed up with an ace to stretch the advantage to 14-6.
Later on it was Bennett pushing the lead to double figures at 22-12 with a kill and Hill clinching the triumph by serving up back-to-back, match-ending service aces.
Louisiana had four blocks in every set in building a 12-4 advantage over ASU and served up five aces alone in the match-clincher. The Ragin' Cajuns defense limited the Red Wolves to a .114 hitting percentage with the visitors limping to the finish line on a -.208 clip (5 K, 10 E, 24 TA) in the final set.
