Louisiana gets the straight sets sweep on second chance in Sun Belt-opening series
TROY, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team used a familiar script to start the second outing of its Sun Belt series with Troy, this time finishing the job by posting a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-21) win on Friday night at Trojan Arena in Troy, Alabama.
The straight sets sweep allowed Louisiana (7-4, 1-1 Sun Belt) to bounce back after being dealt a reverse sweep defeat at the hands of the Trojans on Thursday and gain a split in the two-match, conference-opening series between the two teams.
Louisiana took advantage of a subpar effort from Troy (7-7, 1-1 Sun Belt) from the service line (0 aces, 11 errors) while the squad's defense pressured the Trojans into 15 unforced attack errors and a .123 hitting percentage.
Timely scoring runs throughout the night also factored into the Ragin' Cajuns success. The last push to the finish line was a 9-2 run in the third set keyed by kills from Lauryn Hill and Cami Hicks and capped off by a combo block from the duo that stretched the lead to an insurmountable 18-13 advantage.
The Ragin' Cajuns established momentum early in the contest after a Kelsey Bennett kill, Hicks block and Hill ace finished off a four-point scoring spree for a 9-4 lead in the opening set. Later, it was Hill and Celeste Darling teaming to string together three straight kills to put Louisiana back in the lead for good at 15-12.
Louisiana's grasp on the match lead was sealed when the Trojans' service and attack miscues showed up later in the set and Darling scored a kill to extend the lead to 24-17.
Off the serve of Reka Kotorman the Ragin' Cajuns scored the first three points of the second set and never looked back. The early edge grew to 7-2 after a Mya Wilson ace and a kill from Hill, then separation was gained when a 5-1 run, capped off by back-to-back kills from Darling, opened a 17-11 lead.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
It was a balanced effort on offense as Darling's nine kills off a .600 hitting percentage (9 K, 0 E, 15 TA) led a quartet of Ragin' Cajuns who posted at least seven kills. Louisiana generated 38 kills and hit .200-plus for the second straight night.
Hicks found the floor eight times off of her 16 swings while Hill and Wilson added seven kills apiece.
Defensively, Hicks was the top blocker once again with four stuffs (2 BS, 2 BA) and Coco Gillett rounded up a match-leading 12 digs. Their efforts allowed Louisiana to hold the opposition to a sub-.200 hitting percentage for the fourth straight outing.
Four different players combined for the Ragin' Cajuns' five aces, with Wilson serving up a pair to lead the way.
Kotorman dealt the most assists in the match, passing out 22 assists for her eighth match of 20-plus this season.

Louisiana returns home to Earl K. Long Gym for its Sun Belt Conference home opener from Thursday-Friday, September 29-30, hosting Arkansas State in a two-match series.
