Ragin' Cajuns head to Alabama for Graeme McDowell Intercollegiate
CHOUDRANT – The trio of Eli Ortego, Jake Marler and freshman Malan Potgieter each posted rounds of below par and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team posted a team score of 1-under-par 287 to finish in a tie for 13th overall at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Squire Creek Country Club.
Ortego carded the low round for Louisiana during the final 18 holes with a 3-under-69, which included an eagle at the par-5, 528-yard No. 2 with a bogey-free round on the back nine. The sophomore finished his second event of the season at 1-under-216 to finish tied for 35th after moving up 33 spots in the 124-player field.
Marler, who posted identical rounds of even-par 72 in the first two rounds for the Ragin' Cajuns, birdied his final two holes of the day and shot a 1-under-71 in the final round and 1-under-215 for the 54-hole event.
Potgieter, playing in his second collegiate event for Louisiana, carded a 1-under-71 in the final round to finish tied for 44th at even-par 216. Burke Alford, competing as an individual, carded his third straight round of even-par 72 to finish in 44th.
Matt Weber (70-72-79-221) recorded a 7-over-79 on the final day with Charlie Flynn (74-74-76-224) posting a 4-over-76.
Southern Miss' Thongpipat Rattanayanon (69-66-70-205) maintained his second-round lead and earned a one-stroke victory over Middle Tennessee's Owen Stamper. The Golden Eagles claimed the team title at 836 for the three-day event and one shot in front of MTSU. ULM (839), LSU (840) and Houston (854) rounded out the top five with Louisiana tied with Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas at 864.
Louisiana will return to action Sept. 26-27 when it travels to Gadsden, Ala., to compete in the Graeme McDowell Intercollegiate at Robert Trent Jones' Silver Lakes Golf Course.
