Four players in top seven as Louisiana holds eight-stroke lead after 36 holes

GADSDEN, Ala. – Four members finished in the top seven during the first 36 holes to give the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team an eight-stroke lead after the opening day of the Graeme McDowell Intercollegiate on Monday at Robert Trent Jones' Silver Lakes Course.
 
Jake Marler posted rounds of even-par 72 and 2-over 74 to finish in a first-place tie with Jason Hong of Lipscomb at 146 after 36 holes. Charlie Flynn and freshman Malan Potgieter finished tied for third at 147 with Eli Ortego tied for seventh at 148.
 
The final round of the 54-hole event will begin on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. Louisiana, which will be paired with Lipscomb and North Alabama in the final round, will tee off beginning at 8:33 a.m. Live results will be available at GolfStat.com.
 
Marler, who was four strokes behind first-round leader Alfie Fox of UAB, posted a 1-under 35 on the back nine in the afternoon after shooting a bogey-free 36 on the back in the morning. The sophomore recorded five of Louisiana's 27 birdies in the opening 36 holes, including a pair on par-3's to lead all players.
 
Flynn recorded four birdies in the opening round for the Ragin' Cajuns to finish at 1-over 73 before a near, bogey-free round in the afternoon to post a 2-over 74. Potgieter recorded Louisiana's lone round below par – a 1-under 71 – in the opening round which was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 534-yard No. 9.
 
Ortego, who also posted an eagle at No. 9, posted identical rounds of 2-over-74 for Louisiana to finish two strokes out of the lead with Matt Weber posting rounds of 78 and 75 to finish tied for 33rd at 9-over 153.
 
Burke Alford, playing in his second consecutive event as an individual, recorded rounds of 78 and 77 to finish tied for 38th at 155.
 
Louisiana posted rounds of 290 and 297 to finish at 587 after 36 holes and eight shots in front of Lipscomb (595). North Alabama (598), host UAB (601) and Jacksonville (610) rounded out the top five with Troy (611), Lamar (613), Tarleton State (615), Jacksonville State (617) and Charleston Southern (619) finishing sixth through 10th.
