Historic season for Sun Belt champs ends with 37-23 record
LAFAYETTE – Cam Brown pitched eight solid innings on the mound and No. 22-ranked TCU took an early lead and used solid defense to defeat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, 6-1, in an elimination game on Sunday in the NCAA College Station Regional at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Second-seeded TCU (38-21) advanced to face No. 5-ranked and host Texas A&M (39-18) in Sunday's Regional Final. Louisiana, making its NCAA Regional appearance since 2016 and 17th trip overall, ended the season with a 37-23 record.
"We probably shot all of our bullets last night (against Texas A&M)," head coach Matt Deggs said. "We were running a little low on ammo to begin with and we landed some serious blows last night. I feel like that was our shot and I honestly woke up and expected us to have a great game today.
"We just got out-manned, and TCU was a better ball club today. I love the way my guys compete and love each other, and these boys changed the course of this program this year. That is all I can ask. I will be forever grateful to them."
TCU took a 2-0 lead three batters into the game when Brayden Taylor belted a one-out homer to right to drive in Tommy Sacco, who reached one batter earlier when his liner glanced off the glove of a diving Tyler Robertson at third.
Louisiana, playing without injured starters Connor Kimple and Max Marusak, would respond in the bottom of the first inning as Will Veillon and Kyle DeBarge would lead off with singles before the Ragin' Cajuns loaded the bases on Carson Roccaforte's fielder's choice.
After Veillon was forced out at home on Robertson's dribbler in front of the plate, Louisiana would cut the lead to 2-1 when Heath Hood drew a bases-loaded walk.
But Brown would settle down as he got out of the bases-loaded jam striking out Julian Brock and CJ Willis to end the inning.
TCU would take a page out of Louisiana's playbook from Friday's 7-6 win to take a 3-1 lead with two outs in the second inning. Luke Boyers and Porter Brown were each hit by pitches from starter Jeff Wilson (4-4) before Elijah Nunez hit an RBI single to left-center field to get TCU's back to two.
The Horned Frogs chased Wilson to lead off the fourth as Gray Rodgers doubled off the wall in left field before Brown doubled to center to give TCU a 4-1 cushion.
Louisiana would threaten in the fourth inning when Hood led off with a single and Brock was hit by a pitch. After Willis moved the runners over with a grounder back to the mound, Jonathan Brandon reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases before a hard grounder by pinch-hitter Bobby Lada would lead into an inning-ending double play.
Brown (5-3) scattered five hits, struck out three and allowed an unearned run while helping produce 13 of TCU's 16 groundball outs. Kurtis Byrne led the Horned Frogs at the plate going 3-for-5 with Sacco and Rodgers getting two hits apiece.
Brandon, one of seven seniors playing in their final game in a Ragin' Cajuns uniform, went 2-for-4 to help lead Louisiana's seven-hit attack. DeBarge, the lone player to start in all 60 games for the Ragin' Cajuns during the 2022 season, went 2-for-4 and scored a run for Louisiana with Willis finishing 1-for-4.
Wilson pitched 3.0 innings in his final appearance for Louisiana before being relieved by Cooper Rawls in the fourth. Rawls pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Ragin' Cajuns while senior Austin Perrin and David Christie combined to pitch the final 3.1 innings with four hits allowed.
Louisiana, which claimed its 10th overall Sun Belt Conference title and the first under Deggs, posted its best most wins in a season since a 43-21 record in 2016. The game marked the final appearance for seniors Brandon, Kimple, Perrin, Wilson, Austin Garrett, Jacob Schultz and Brandon Talley.
"I came back (to Louisiana) for the Robichaux family, I came back for Cajun Nation and for the 2014 team," Deggs said. "I believe that we gave everybody something to be proud of this year. These kids came along when I needed them most and as I always say I need them way more than they need me. That is a fact, but what makes my heart full is that these kids took this program and put it back to something people can be proud of.
"This is something a community can really rally around and there is no better place than Cajun Nation."
